My Dell XPS 17 froze up and eventually Blue screened. When trying to boot it up again it BSOD I have dealt with boot problems before but I have tried all options this time. Attached is a flowchart of what happens when I boot. At least I need access to the CMD.

I made it to CMD but don't have access to any of my files on the C: drive I was going to use CMD to move the important ones to my D: then re install the OS

The drive letter of your Windows C: drive has been changed when booting from the Windows 8 CD. You need to run diskpart to find out what is the drive letter assigned to it. From CMD, type:
  1. diskpart
  2. list volume
Look at the list and take note of the drive letter for your Windows partition. You can usually tell by looking at the volume label or by the size of the Windows partition. Next, type Exit to exit diskpart then navigate to the new drive assigned to it.

When I use diskpart it shows 4 volumes, Volume 0 F: DVD ROM 3415MB, and Volume 1 C: Partition 19GB, Volume 2 E: Partition 679GB, Volume 3 D: Partition 698GB, Volume 4 (No letter) Partition 101MB

If I am not mistaken,
  1. Volume 1 C: Partition is the recovery partition since its size is only 19GB
  2. Volume 4 (No letter) is the system reserved partition for Windows 7 (100 MB), which tells me you did upgrade to Windows 8 from Windows 7
  3. That leaves us with Volume 2 (E drive) and Volume 3 (D Drive) so one of these is your C Drive when booted into Windows.
To find out which one is your C Drive in Windows, from command prompt, type E: <ENTER>, type DIR <ENTER> and look for Windows folder, if found then this is your OS C: drive, if not, Do the same for D:.

I also suspect that maybe one of the drive is either bad or corrupted, i suggest from the command prompt:
  1. run chkdsk /f /r E:
  2. chkdsk /f /r D:
This will take a while to complete so be patient !!!

I did chkdsk turns out my OS disk is E: but is now in RAW file system. I suspect the HDD is broken, I cannot access I and have been researching ways to try and recover the files off it. I would install the OS to the other drive and throw out the broken one.
