I have a brand new XPS14 that I seem to be having issues with. The user was getting a lot of BSOD in the middle of doing work. I rebuilt the System from the CD that came from Dell loaded all the drivers from their site, but she is still getting a BSOD. I am stumped as to what is causing this. I have attached my dump and info below. Would love to know why... Any questions please ask. I am an IT professional so not may issues stump me but this one has been

Hi there, run the built in Dell diagnostics.

Tap F12 on boot up to get the boot menu and at the bottom on Dells there is Diagnostics. Will require you to sit with it for abit to choose whether you seen certain displays but will run a HDD and memory test plus alot of other motherboard tests.

Any problem found will be shown via a error code and this will give the exact fault on Dells website.

The Dell diags are a great idea!!!

The dump blames usb80236.sys - so it's most likely that USB device(s) are to blame.
Please rerun the data collection app and let it run for at least 15 minutes (or until the app itself tells you that it's done). Then zip it up and upload it for us to have a look at.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

@kingtez - I have run the full diagnostic and no errors..

@usasma - I will try to update that WiFi driver and get back to you. I thought the diag that I uploaded was a full scan? I will do one again and upload it if the driver does not solve the issue.

BSOD's are confusing things, and IMO they've become more confusing with Win8 (and I think they've added 10-15 more BSOD codes with Win8.1!)

Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
Hopefully this'll point out a 3rd party driver that's causing problems.

Original Install Date: 7/25/2012, 10:07:13 PM
Any idea why this might be? Maybe the system was Win7 upgraded to Win8?
This date is well before Win8 was released to the public and BIOS mode is set to Legacy (not UEFI)
As Secure Boot is unsupported, Dell should not have been able to sell this as a Win8 system (it's a requirement from Microsoft).

You have 2 drives (C: and W:) each with the same amount of used space and free space (exactly the same).
You have 1 hard drive that is approximately the size of one of the drives.
Any idea why this might be?

SSD's were temperamental when they first came out, but their reliability has improved greatly over the last year or two. There are 2 things that MUST be checked on systems with BSOD's and SSD's:
1) That the SSD firmware is the latest available for the SSD
2) That the storage controller drivers on the motherboard are the most recent. They must date from late 2012 or later. This is ALL controllers, not just the one that the SSD is attached to.

This device is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?
Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client Virtual Miniport Adapter for Windows x64 ROOT\NET\0000 This device is disabled.
Please enable the device and then update it to the latest, Win8 compatible version. Feel free to disable it again once it's been updated.

USB devices:
USB\VID_046D&PID_C03E
USB\VID_0C45&PID_646C
USB\VID_0FCA&PID_8012

More to follow, have to run out to work for a bit.....

1. The install date saying it's 7/25/2013 I have no answer for. I installed these devices from scratch using an install disk from Dell. Not a Image disk but a true Windows installer disk. Maybe the bios time was way wrong when I installed?

2. The C and W drive are on purpose. The W drive maps to a folder inside the Users folder for Working files. We are transitioning soon to have all Work files located on a server and to get people used to that I started to create a W drive on all new machines. This way when we transition to W drive pointing to the server the user will already be using the W drive and will not know the difference when it happens. Its a registry setting

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\DOS Devices]

"W:"="\\??\\C:\\Users\\username\\Working Files"

Nice way of mapping persistently a Drive to a folder. But it also show the same free disk space etc..

3. Cisco Secure adapter is for VPN and is disabled by Cisco's design. It only enables when you connect to the VPN using their client.

I will double check the SSD controller and the other controllers. I will also run the driver tool that you referenced at the top of your reply.

Here's what I do for BSOD's:
Just FYI - here's how I do BSOD analysis':
- first I rule out 3rd party drivers (over 90% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I rule out hardware (less than 10% of BSOD's are due to this)
- then I look at Windows problems (less than 1% of BSOD's are due to this - as long as Windows Updates are fully up to date).

USB devices:
USB\VID_046D&PID_C03E - Logitech USB Mouse
USB\VID_0C45&PID_646C - Looks to be a WebCam
USB\VID_0FCA&PID_8012 - BlackBerry Device

As this is a series of USB errors, I'd suggest doing the following:
First (just a hunch that I have), I suggest removing the BlackBerry Device to see if that's the cause
Then I suggest removing the Logitech USB Mouse (and use the trackpad) for a couple of days to see if that's the cause (it's less likely than the webcam - but is easier to workaround in the short term).
As for the webcam, I suggest updating the drivers. Also, if possible, you can disable it in the BIOS and see if that helps. Most issues with webcams that I see are hardware.

My thoughts about the boot stuff is that you installed the OS in legacy mode - rather than in UEFI. And that may be causing issues with the system. If possible, try enabling the UEFI and SecureBoot - then install Windows 8 from the Dell media.

Just FYI - the controller dates will show up in the BSOD's (if needed). It's the firmware updates that I can't see - so please check at the SSD manufacturer's site for those.

There are some networking drivers listed in the raw stack output - so that adds to my suspicion about the BlackBerry.
There's also some involvement with hal.dll - which may mean compatibility or hardware issues.
Networking issues don't = BlackBerry, but I'm unsure of which other programs on your system will be involved both with USB and networking. Finally, I see BlackBerry drivers in the memory dump, but no webcam or mouse drivers.

We may get a different result from Driver Verifier, but until then the main suspect is the BlackBerry.
