New PC BSOD on Shutdown

Hi everyone, very relieved to have found this forum and grateful that there are people here willing to analyze BSOD crash causes. I am a long-time PC user but first time Windows 8 user. Recently bought a new Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A-DH51 with the specs listed below. For the first several hours everything was working well, until I finished updating everything / installing programs I needed: this includes: various driver updates & windows updates, SofTest v11 (a exam-taking software that "locks out" all other programs on the computer for examination purposes), Google Chrome, Logitech SetPoint for Logitech mouse, and ClassicShell (a UI shell for adding a "start" button to Windows 8).

It BSODed a couple of times while I was browsing during the first two occurrences, but since then, the BSOD has *only* been on shutdown. Restart is always fine. Usually, after the BSOD restart, if I shutdown from the log-in screen without actually logging in, the shutdown is always successful.

I read up on some of the posts on this forum about similar BSOD on shutdown occurrences, and it sounds like it might be a driver but I have trouble figuring it out from the dump files. I also tried running driver verifier, but couldn't isolate the problem by getting any of the drivers to crash. I also ran the Win8 Memory Diagnostic Tool, but it yielded no results. I am particularly worried because I am taking the bar exam with this laptop in two weeks (thus the SofTest software), and don't want to go into the exam with a potentially unstable system.

Please find my SF Diagnostic Grab-All zip file attached. Thanks in advance!

Specs of the PC in question:
Asus Zenbook Prime UX31A-DH51
OS: Windows 8
Process: Intel Core i5-3317U @1.70GHZ
RAM: 4GB
HDD: Sandisk SSD U100 124GB

Please let me know if I need to provide any additional information. Thanks again!

Oh Boy!!! Lawyer jokes!!! (just kidding :0)

The reports aren't complete. Please rerun the app and let it run for at least 15 minutes (or until the app itself tells you that it's done). Then zip it up and upload it again.

A few of the memory dumps mention dokan.sys - a library used by a number of programs ( Dokan » Dokan library ) I'd suspect that it's a part of the SofTest v11 software, but cannot verify this. Have you tried the tech support options that SofTest offers? (re-download/Team Viewer support/etc)

Have you run this?:
Then please run the following DISM commands to see if there's any problems with the system (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after each one:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

If the problem is fixable, you can use this command to repair i (from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt). Press Enter after typing it:
Code:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

From this article: Repair a Windows Image

Since there's also mention of involvement of fastfat.sys and ntfs.sys, I'd try:
- chkdsk /r /f from an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt
- ensure that your SSD has the latest firmware installed
- Crystal Mark (free) - primarily for testing SSD's (actually a benchmarking software): Software - Crystal Dew World

In general (with SSD's) it's also advisable to update the storage controller drivers to one later than mid-2012. Go to the webpage for your system and download/install the latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver (it's located in the "Other" section).

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

BugCheck Info: [url=http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html#0x00000018]REFERENCE_BY_POINTER (18)[/url]
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000000, Object type of the object whose reference count is being lowered
Arg2: fffff8a019eda550, Object whose reference count is being lowered
Arg3: 0000000000000010, Reserved
Arg4: 0000000000000001, Reserved
The reference count of an object is illegal for the current state of the object.
Each time a driver uses a pointer to an object the driver calls a kernel routine
to increment the reference count of the object. When the driver is done with the
pointer the driver calls another kernel routine to decrement the reference count.
Drivers must match calls to the increment and decrement routines. This bugcheck
can occur because an object's reference count goes to zero while there are still
open handles to the object, in which case the fourth parameter indicates the number
of opened handles. It may also occur when the object?s reference count drops below zero
whether or not there are open handles to the object, and in that case the fourth parameter
contains the actual value of the pointer references count.

Just FYI - there's no evidence of Driver Verifier crashes. You haven't cleaned the system since using Driver Verifier, have you?
If so, re-enable it and let it crash a couple of times - the zip up the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump and upload it with your next post.

If you haven't cleaned the system, then there's several reasons for not having Driver Verifier memory dumps
- the most common reason is that this isn't a driver problem (I think this is unlikely) - but rather it's a hardware problem. Since this is critical for you, I'd suggest running these free diagnostics (skip the hard drive one if you've already followed the steps for the SSD in my previous post.
- the next most common being that the system could be crashing before the memory dump can be written (which is possible with filesystem drivers). Not much we can do from there as Microsoft has "dumbed down" the BSOD screen in Win8 (in older versions of Windows you could get a bit more info from the BSOD).

So, we've dealt with 3rd party drivers and hardware. The final thing to look at is Windows itself.
I've had issues at work where a "Reset" of Win8 just wasn't enough to fix a system.
I'd suggest that you create a recovery drive (at the Start Screen type in "recoverydrive" (one word, without the quotes) and press Enter. That should let you reinstall Windows should that become necessary later on.

Hi usasma, thank you so much for responding so quickly and for helping.

The reports aren't complete. Please rerun the app and let it run for at least 15 minutes (or until the app itself tells you that it's done). Then zip it up and upload it again.

Sorry, I closed it pretty much right after it said it finished grabbing the crash dump, didn't realize it was in the process of grabbing more information. I've uploaded the updated & complete SF report. This morning I updated the drivers you noted (except for Dokan, I have no idea what to do about that), and used the laptop all day to study. Didn't get any BSOD while working on the laptop, but each time I performed a shutdown, the BSOD invariably occurs.

I have not yet contacted SofTest, mostly because I have no idea whether it is the cause at all. Their FAQ and Troubleshooting pages do no have anything about possible compatibility issues with Windows 8 (in fact, they say it's supposed to be fully compatible with Windows 8); nor do they have any relevant info about BSOD caused by their program. As for re-download and reinstall, sadly I have to submit a request to the Bar Examination Board and give just cause for re-downloading and reinstalling (lol, I know...lawyers :p ), so I'm not gonna do that just yet, at least until I can confirm SofTest is what's causing the issue.

Have you run this?:

I ran the DISM command today as you instructed, it reports "No component store corruption detected"

I also ran chkdsk as you instructed, also no problems detected.

I have updated the ATK Package drivers to the most recent version--I was surprised to find that although the pre-installed Asus Live Update program updated some of the drivers, it didn't catch any of these updates.

I also updated the Intel Rapid Storage driver--although the strange thing is that it still shows the old driver version number, no matter how many times I reinstall. Each time it tells me that the new driver has been successfully installed and asks me to restart. After restart, I would see that the driver version number remains the same, even though the installation package is clearly labeled as more recent (higher driver version number).

As for driver verifier, I ran it previously (by running verifier.exe from command prompt), I ran it for about half a day but it didn't crash at all (except on shutdown, as always). I can try running it again; how long should I run it for? Which drivers should I run it on? Go through all of them or should I just target the suspect drivers you ID'd?

Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it.

Nice work! Maybe you should skip the lawyer thing and go into PC repair! :0)

Try disabling Fast Startup and see if that helps stop the BSOD's (recently we've been seeing issues with it): http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-8-a.html\

Interestingly, the latest memory dump has a lot of audio drivers involved. Try uninstalling your audio drivers, then reinstall the latest one's from Realtek

Please uninstall the AI charger (if not done already). I haven't seen BSOD's due to it in a while, but it was a large problem with BSOD's a while back. If needed you can always reinstall it after the system has been stabilized.

If the system continues to BSOD after the above, then please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
Let the system BSOD at least 3 times (even if it's only the one's at shutdown) - then zip up and upload the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump with your next post.

Haha, studying for the bar exam IS making me wish that I could just forget about this whole lawyer thing.

Try disabling Fast Startup and see if that helps stop the BSOD's (recently we've been seeing issues with it): http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/6320-fast-startup-turn-off-windows-8-a.html\

That's actually one of the first things I tried when the BSODs started occuring; I googled around and saw that it was the cause of the BSOD in many cases. However, it didn't solve the problem at all in my case. I turned it back on since I figured it wasn't the problem.

I turned it off again today just to give it another try, and I had ONE successful shutdown (without BSOD)! But that was it...BSOD came back for all the shut downs I tried after that.

Interestingly, the latest memory dump has a lot of audio drivers involved. Try uninstalling your audio drivers, then reinstall the latest one's from Realtek

I have a question about this: this morning I updated the Realtek driver to the most recent one found on the Asus website (dated January 2013). However, I noticed that the Realtek website has a more recent driver (dated April 2013). Which one should I use? I'm just wondering if I should be sticking with the ones on the Asus website only.

And, sadly, updating to the one posted on the Asus website didn't seem to do any good, still getting BSOD on shutdown.

I have uninstalled the AI Charger program, forgot to mention that in my previous post. Unfortunately, that didn't change anything either.

I will run the driver verifier and report back later.

Again, thanks for your time and help!

It depends on what's causing the error - and we don't know that yet (and may not know even if we fix it!).

The difference (IME) between the Asus audio and the Realtek audio is that Asus sometimes adds some stuff that isn't really needed (unless you're a real audiophile). I prefer the bare Realtek drivers as they are the latest available.

Please zip up the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump directory and upload it with your next post.
Then we can start fresh with the Driver Verifier memory dumps (if there are any).

*EDIT: Nevermind, the full list of drivers wouldn't load when I launch the verifier through the shortcut in the SF Utility; but when I launch it directly by running verifier.exe, then the full list of drivers loaded correctly

************

I ran into a problem while trying to enable the driver verifier:

I followed the instructions provided at Driver Verifier Settings; however, for the last step:
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"

When I selected the "Select driver names from a list and click "Next" option, the list only shows three drivers, all provided by Microsoft. (Please see attached screenshot).

I tried selecting the "Add currently not loaded driver(s) to the list" option, but that requires me to hunt down each driver individually (I have no idea where to find them, they weren't in the C:/Windows/drivers folder).

Just FYI - most of the drivers are in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers folder.
Those not in there are (IMO) poorly designed - and are a royal pain to those of us trying to fix BSOD's due to them.

I presume that you were not in Safe Mode when trying verifier.exe? If that's the case, then I suspect that there's a huge problem with your system - or that the dokan.sys driver is doing things that it shouldn't be (IMO). As the SofTest v11 programs is designed for taking tests, I'd suspect that there's a lot of things that it does to the OS that aren't documented. Before making any of the choices that I mention below, I'd suggest that you contact the SofTest tech support to make sure that we're not attempting to fix a deliberate feature of the program (such as the dokan.sys driver and the file systems that it generates).

As such, it's time to make a choice - continue to mess around with this attempting to fix the individual problems, or wipe the system and start over clean. I don't suggest the Refresh and Reset options simply because they take extra time to do, and then to test and see if they fixed things.

Unfortunately, this will mean submitting a request to re-download the SofTest v11 software (and then, what do we do if this problem crops up again?). I'm not familiar with this software, but is it possible to save the download and then re-install it multiple times?

Another option is to try this program on a Win7 system just for the exams - then you can format and reinstall Win8 (but getting a copy of Win7 may be expensive). I suggest this because Win7 is a more mature OS, it's been running this stuff longer than Win8 (so problems will have already been identified), and because it's got less "quirks" than Win8. Again, you'll have to reinstall SofTest v11 - so that's a drawback.

While you're deciding what to do, please upload this report. It may give us a few more clues as to what's going on:
Please do the following:
- open Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc)
- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
- right click on Administrative Events
- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

Good luck!

Just had another idea!

Try a clean boot: How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista and make sure everything works properly
Then try a clean boot, but leave the SofTest (and any unknown) startups and services enabled - and see if the SofTest works properly
Let us know about any unknowns and we can venture opinions on enabling/disabling them.

And finally, if the system only BSOD's on shutdown, then leave it on until the exams start (test to see if you can sleep or hibernate).
The OS is robust enough that a couple of BSOD's probably won't cause any significant harm to the OS (and after the exams you can get rid of the SofTest software)

Sorry, the driver list not loading was a false alarm (I think?): I launched it from the SF Utility menu, and it wasn't loading the drivers correctly, but when I launched it the usual way (by typing "verifier.exe" in "Run"), it loads the list of drivers without problem. I edited by previous post, but I prolly should've just deleted the whole thing to prevent confusion.

But here's another confusing thing: I haven't had a single BSOD since enabling the verifier.exe. I didn't make any change to my system other than enabling it. The last change I made prior to enabling the driver verifier was 1) updating realtek drivers, and 2) disabling Win8 fast startup, in that order. But even after those changes (and I did make sure to restart the system so that I know those changes took effect), I was having BSODs on shutdown. Ever since enabling driver verifier, though, I haven't had any. That doesn't make any sense to me.

Since I haven't had a crash since enabling driver verifier, I guess I'll wait a little bit before I upload new files for analysis--I'm guessing the files won't be helpful if there hasn't been any crashes while running driver verifier? Also, this leads me to the next question:

With regard to your last post...should I avoid shutdown altogether to prevent triggering BSODs? Do excessive BSODs cause harm to the OS? Could it possibly cause any harm to the hardware? I've been shutting down my laptop a lot more often throughout the day than usual, just because I've been doing it to "test" it after each change I made (each time I update a driver, made a significant change to settings, etc). Needless to say, I've triggered quite a few BSODs during this past week.

Although it's unusual, it does happen that turning on Driver Verifier can stop BSOD's. I've seen it a couple of time over the years. Most times we just continue troubleshooting without it. If Driver Verifier doesn't cause any BSOD's, then the throught is that there isn't any problem with the 3rd party drivers (so we still have to look at hardware and Windows drivers).

IMO BSOD's don't harm hardware. It's just like shutting the system down, so it shouldn't cause any damage.
It can corrupt the software installation but...
- later versions of Windows are more "robust" and are more able to recover from unexpected shutdowns.
- if it's in the middle of writing data when it crashes, that particular file can become corrupted. If it's a critical file that isn't protected by Windows System File Checker, then you may end up with a corrupted installation.

IMO these changes aren't cumulative, so I don't expect that prior BSOD's will contribute to future failures. But once again, it's not known which files (if any) are corrupted. Triggering BSOD's while troubleshooting is an acceptable practice - but if you're switching to just trying to make this thing last through exams, then the suggestion to avoid BSOD's is a better choice in that scenario.

All of that was based on the premise that there was already some damage to the OS - since the drivers weren't showing up in verifier. Now that you've figured out the verifier problem, we're back on the troubleshooting (although the other suggestions can still be used if so desired).

An update on the problem...it just got worse

No BSODs on shutdown, but last night while trying to shutdown, it was stuck at the "shutting down" screen for a couple of minutes, and then the computer restarted again--as it usually does when it blue screens, except the blue screen didn't come up. It also didn't create a dump file. The last dump file was from 7/18, which was right before I enabled driver verifier.

But the bigger problem is: I launched SofTest (the exam software) today, just because I wanted to make sure that all hell isn't gonna break loose while I'm taking the exam. And all hell broke loose.

Here's some background on what the software does--at least, from what I observe, I don't know what it actually does in the background: after you launch the program, it lets you choose an exam file to load--once you choose it, it begins the "lock-down" mode where it closes all other programs, replaces your desktop wallpaper with an ugly "ExamSoft SoftTest v.11" wallpaper, and opens the exam window (which looks is basically just a word processor). After you're done typing, there's a "Finish Exam" button. Once you click that, it'll save the exam, close the word processor, and try to upload the exam file. Once that's done, it'll begin to exit the exam mode and lift the "lockdown."

Launching and running the program didn't seem problematic this time. I opened a mock exam, left the exam software running for an hour or so, typed a few paragraph in the testing software, and then tried to end the mock exam. The program then uploaded the mock exam successfully, and I tried to exit the exam. Problems started occurring while it's trying to lift the "lock down" and get out of the exam mode. My wallpaper came back, and as the system icons/notification icons on the right hand corner of the taskbars started coming back, the computer suddenly restarted (no BSOD). After restarting, I didn't get a "Send Error Report?" prompt, and I noticed that there wasn't a new crash dump file. The other thing was that even though it detected the wireless network as "Connected" and "Internet Access," I wasn't able to get any network connection. I tried restarting the wireless card, rebooting, checking the configurations, etc, to no avail. Eventually, it started showing "Connected", but "Limited Access".

I tried updating and reinstalling the driver for the wireless card, and that didn't seem to work either. When I tried to get Windows to diagnose the problem, it says that the problem is that "Windows cannot automatically detect network proxy settings." (After reboot, however, the diagnosis became "Windows cannot identify the problem"). I couldn't even ping the default gateway (my router)--it simply says that the command is not available when the media is disconnected--which is weird because my network adapter is clearly enabled and it says that it is connected to the router (but "Limited Access"). At one point I saw a "Virtual Wireless Adapter" named "Wireless LAN *12", or something like that, show up in the list of network adapters--I suspected that the virtual network adapter was the reason why whenever I tried to use the ping command, it would tell me that the media is disconnected. Before I could investigate that "virtual adapter" or figure out how to get rid of it, it disappeared from the list of adapters, and I am still unable to connect to the internet or even use the ping command to figure out exactly what is going on.

The last time I tried a mock exam with this software was when I first installed it--if was during the "exit exam" phase that I had the first and only non-shutdown-related blue screen (and it was also my first BSOD on the laptop). At that time too many things were going on (various Windows updates, driver updates, etc), so I dismissed it as an anomaly. But given this second try, I'm starting to think SofTest definitely has something to do with the BSODs.

I also contacted tech support for ExamSoft about what happened, but I feel like their initial response will be to blame the problem on something else ("disable your anti-virus, blah blah blah"). Any thoughts on what may be happening here? Sorry I can't provide very technical information (especially without any crash dumps being generated), I'm just hoping my observation will at least help point us toward the cause of the problem...

Also, please run the data collection app again. Those reports may give some additional info.

Then, have a look in Device Manager and see if there's any items in there (particularly in the Network Adapters section) that aren't familiar. Try disabling them and see if that helps you connect (it may require a reboot).

Finally, once you get it fixed, try a clean boot to see if you can run the software (this'll help rule out any conflicting 3rd party software): How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows 8, Windows 7, or Windows Vista

I was getting so frustrated that I decided to just do a "Refresh." I kinda wish I waited for your response, but hopefully this clean start will make things easier...

This time I paid closer attention to all the Windows updates and made sure to update all the drivers from the outset. So far so good, everything seems to be running smoothly and no BSOD. That adds to the suspicion that ExamSoft was doing something funky, especially once it's getting out of the lock-down.

I submitted my request to re-download SofTest, and hopefully they'll respond quickly so I have time to figure this out. Going forward, is there any preventative things I can do? I would hate for ExamSoft to mess up my system again and have to waste another afternoon refreshing my computer or troubleshooting. It seems like system restore works differently in Win8? And even with system restore, would it be enough to undo the problem in the event that ExamSoft starts wreaking havoc again?

Once I get to retry SofTest, and if things go wrong again, could I then follow your instructions re: the admin event log? I'm guessing the admin event log will provide information about what's going on in the background when SofTest is running/closing?

The less that you install on your system, the less likely you are to have problems.
I'd suggest that you go with a clean install of Windows (not a refresh or reset) in order to minimize the chances of any other software contributing to this. Then it'll just be Windows and the SofTest software.

In general, we use the regular reports for BSOD's.
If you're having problems that don't involve BSOD's, then we'll start looking at the Event Logs. The Admin log is a collection of errors and warnings from all the logs on the system (sort of a summary of the problem stuff). It may give us suggestions on how to proceed and, at times, we'll need the other logs (from the reports) to look deeper into the System and Application event logs.

Let's see what happens, and see what SofTest tech support suggests. Keep testing the system - as a BSOD or serious error at this point (without the SofTest installed) could point to things that cause problems with the SofTest.

Finally, have a look at the Admin event viewer log. If it's full of errors from after the refresh, then post it here for us to have a look at.

Good luck!
