Random Windows 8 BSOD

Hi I left my computer unattended for a few hours when I noticed my computer restarted with a BSOD. I've updated all my drivers before the BSOD. I sometimes get random freezes for 1-2 seconds.

I've had this computer for 1 month so far.

I reseted the CMOS, ran prime95 24 hours small fft (no errors) and hci memtest 200% coverage 4 instances.

Check for Windows Updates, you're a few shy of the average (which isn't a big deal) - but checking will make sure that none are missing. In particular secdrv.sys dates from 2006 - and on my Win8 system it dates from 2012.

VMWare Virtual Ethernet is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why?

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).
Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): [DEL] DuplexSecure - FAQ [/DEL] Link broken as of 21 Jul 2012
New link (15 Aug 2012): DuplexSecure - Downloads (pick the appropriate version for your system and select "Un-install" when you run it).
Alternate link: Disc-Tools.com
Manual procedure here: Registry and SPTD problems | DAEMON Pro Help

MSI Afterburner (along with Riva Tuner and EVGA Precision) are known to cause BSOD's in some Windows systems (it's driver is usually RTCore64.sys). Please un-install it immediately!

If you're overclocking, please stop the overclock while we're troubleshooting. Feel free to resume the overclock once the system has been stabilized.

This is a STOP 0x124 error - most often associated with hardware - but there are some software causes that should be investigated first (such as the items I mentioned above - and any I may mention below). But, as it's most often hardware, please start with these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics Please note that I suggest running Prime95 on the Blend test and that I also suggest MemTest86+ - not the HCI memory test

tap0901t.sys dates from Wed Sep 16 02:02:43 2009 (and is also in the stack text) - this is most likely a part of Tunngle (P2P VPN software). Please uninstall it and test to see if this stops the BSOD's. Should you want to keep using it, please download the latest, Win8 compatible version from the manufacturer's website - after the system is stabilized.

wdcsam64.sys dates from Wed Apr 16 04:39:08 2008 - it is a part of the Western Digital software and this version is known to cause BSOD's on Windows systems. Please uninstall it immediately!

Just checked for new Windows Updates, no new updates.

VMWare Virtual Ethernet is disabled intentionally cause I never use it.

I didnt install the sptd driver with daemon tools.

I only use afterburner for fan control. However I did overclock my cpu and gpu but it was not stable so i reverted back.

Ran Memtest86+ with no errors. I'm running latest tunngle.

How do i uninstall WD SES? Cant find it under programs and features.

Please remove Daemon Tools anyway - it's not just the sptd.sys driver that causes problems with it. You can always reinstall it after we've stopped the BSOD's.

Please remove Afterburner anyway - it can cause BSOD's regardless of what you use if for. You can always reinstall it after we've stopped the BSOD's.

If latest tunngle is from 2009, I doubt that it's Win8 compatible. What does it say on the website (if unsure, please provide a link).

To remove wdcsam64.sys safely:
1) Create a Restore Point using System Restore
2) Create a Repair disc:
Win7 - Go to Start...All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc
Win8 - Press "WIN" and "R" to open the Run dialog...type "RECDISC" (without the quotes) and press ENTER
3) Test the System Repair disc to make sure that you can get to the System Restore entry when you boot from the disk (you may also want to try actually using System Restore to make sure that it works)
4) Download this free program (Autoruns for Windows) and use it to disable any instances of wdcsam64.sys that are starting (or any other Western Digital entries) (DO NOT DELETE - only disable by removing the checkmark in the left hand column)
5) Check in Device Manager (to include showing hidden devices from the View menu item) and ensure that any instances of wdcsam64.sys (or any other Western Digital entries) are "Uninstalled" (DO NOT DISABLE THESE).
6) Check in the Services applet (services.msc) to be sure any instances of wdcsam64.sys or any other Western Digital entries are disabled.
7) Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers and rename the wdcsam64.sys driver to wdcsam64.BAD

In the event that the system doesn't boot:

1) Boot from the System Repair disc and use the Command Prompt option to rename wdcsam64.BAD to wdcsam64.sys
2) Boot from the System Repair disc and use the System Restore option to restore the system to a point before the changes were made.

Good luck!

I removed Daemon Tools and MSI Afterburner and removed wdcsam64.sys.

But I never experienced a BSOD since the first one. I didn't install/uninstall any drivers or hardware. I still wonder why I had a BSOD.

There's no specific answer as to why this happened - just a bunch of possibilities.

You can have a driver programmer go over your reports, and they can provide a bit more detail - but in the end it's a matter of trial and error to figure out what's causing it.

Figuring out if it's fixed is a matter of time. That is, waiting to see if it comes back. In general, if it doesn't come back within 2 weeks, I'd consider it fixed.

Good luck!

Can the issue be caused by the mobo? I got it open box from a warehouse sale.

Yes, it's possibly a mobo issue - but we haven't looked at enough stuff even to presume that it's hardware.
Just to get to presuming hardware we have to rule out:
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).
Daemon Tools and MSI Afterburner are examples of the low-level drivers that can cause these sort of problems. Uninstall them for now - you can always reinstall them later on.

And, once we rule out the above issues, then you have to run the hardware diagnostics to rule out as many pieces of the hardware as possible.

Finally, if you're looking for an exact answer, then you remove/replace hardware (as able) until you've eliminated everything but the motherboard (you may not eliminate all, but you can get close to eliminating all). Here's how that goes: Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting

As an aside, you can also rule out low-level Windows problems by reinstalling the OS "clean": Canned Speeches - Clean Install
But I usually don't suggest this unless there's specific issues that point at Windows.

My BIOS is up to date, I just checked their site. The fixes have nothing to do with the issue.

I overclocked my cpu and gpu. But I reverted to default settings.

I connected a usb sound card (x-fi hd usb)and wd mybook.

afterburner and daemon tools is already uninstalled

I scanned for malware with Malwarebytes antimalware. Reported no viruses.

I have noted occasional problems with USB sound cards. You can test them by removing them (and their software) to see if it stops the BSOD's.

Please don't use the software that comes with the W-D MyBook. Older versions (2008) are known to cause BSOD's on Windows systems. The software isn't required - but if you want it's functionality, there's plenty of freeware available that doesn't have these problems.

If the system is still having BSOD's, please zip up the contents of C:\Windows\Minidump and upload it with your next post.
