Hi

A few hours ago I downloaded & installed all the windows 8 updates and after rebooting I get this blue screen.
I tried to repair it with a boot disk but it doesn't start up at all.

Thanks in advance

Takes a while for us to help - there just aren't that many of us analysts available. I'm generally only online in the morning, so if you post at 10:00am you'll wait until the next day to hear from me.

If you can get into Windows, please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis: http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

If not, please describe exactly what you tried with the boot disk (and which boot disk you used). In most cases there is a Startup Repair disk that can fix BCD errors even if Windows doesn't boot.

Another possibility is a dead/dying hard drive. To see if this is the issue, try this free diagnostic procedure: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure

More details about the disk/iso that you downloaded please (I'm trying to figure if it's a copy of the Repair disk that Windows makes)

You can also check another computer with Win8 and try this:
- Press "WIN" and "R" to open the Run dialog
- type "RECDISC" (without the quotes) and press ENTER
- Follow the prompts to create the disc.

First try this free hard drive diagnostic (no sense in trying to fix a dead/dying hard drive): Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure
Then, if the diags pass the drive - try Startup Repair 3 times - rebooting between tries
Then, if it still doesn't boot, try these commands at the Command Prompt:
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /rebuildbcd

Try these free, bootable diagnostics (you don't need to get into Windows to use them): Initial Hardware Diagnostics

1) I suspect malware based on your PM - so please use a couple of the bootable rescue disks listed at the bottom of the anti-malware page.

2) Although it's unlikely that the hard drive is bad, I have seen computers come out of the box with dead hard drives. It's best to test in order to be sure - as trying to fix a bad hard drive is an exercise in futility.

You can make a Startup Repair disc (also known as a System Repair disc) on another Win8 computer by following the directions I gave above. More instructions here: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2855-system-repair-disc-create-windows-8-a.html

Then, to try Startup Repair, you can boot from the disc (it doesn't need Windows) and you can run Startup Repair from the disc. To run Startup Repair from the disc, see these instructions:

Use option 4 to boot to the Startup Options menu: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4935-startup-options-menu-boot-windows-8-a.html
Then use this link to get into Startup Repair: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2269-system-recovery-options-boot-windows-8-a.html (go to Troubleshoot, then to Advanced Options - Automatic Repair is Startup Repair).
