Evening everyone,

Can someone interpret this one for me please? Satellite sucks for downloading anything more than a couple mb so I can't read it on my own.

Thanks,
Tim

Please provide this information so we can provide a complete analysis: http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html

The memory dumps blame your Realtek Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC (rtwlane.sys). Please:
- download the latest Win8 compatible driver for your wireless card from Realtek
- uninstall the current wireless card drivers
- install the freshly downloaded drivers
- monitor for further BSOD's

And the appexDrv.sys driver (AMD Quick Stream Technology - flow processing engine driver) may also be involved
I'm uncertain what it belongs to on your system, so please use the following procedure to update all AMD and ATI drivers:
- download the latest Win8 compatible driver from the Toshiba website
- uninstall the corresponding driver program from the system
- install the freshly downloaded driver
- monitor for further BSOD's

Finally, there's traces of Norton on the system - and it won't work well with McAfee. Please use this free tool to remove all traces of the Norton from your system: http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080710133834EN
NOTE: NEVER run more than 1 anti-virus, firewall, Internet Security/Security Center application at the same time.

Hi John,

I followed those directions and ran the program on the laptop. I had to rerun it because I forgot to run it as admin. Laptop crashes everytime you connect to a wireless network. I'll try it again and see if the program pulls more information.

On the Norton, there appears to be a backup program. Now that you mention it, I just realized it might have been part of a full package. There is a connectivity issue using hard wire. Internet works on the laptop only at the guys house, but no where else. It only affects browsers (IE & Firefox). I can ping, resolve DNS through command prompt, and widgets / gadgets get their updates. But no webpages.

I'm way too out of date to be doing this. Last time I was any type of certification was 10 years ago. I got out the computer field but I felt bad for this guy. I appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Tim

I'm late for work. The program is a bit slow, so allow it at least 15 minutes to extract the reports (or until the app itself says that it's done).

In short, any errors that blame network drivers can also be due to any program that accesses the internet for any reason.

Ok, it went a lot longer than it looked along with a dialog box that got hidden. My apologies. I can be impatient.

Here is the full file. Working on the Norton issue now.

I can wait however long it takes. Guy has been dealing with this for a few months. He's used to it. Any improvement I make would make him happy.

I spoke with the guy again. He clarified the problem. The laptop works fine on land, both with wireless and wired connections. Hotels, wifi spots, the house. But when he comes offshore, it acts up. The majority of offshore runs off satellite internet. Would there be something that could cause these problems?

Update: Only Norton tool left is Norton Anti-Theft. I ran the removal tool after I uninstalled all other Norton items.

Downloading new drivers now.

What's the exact model of this system (so I can research the appexDrv.sys driver).

The memory dumps show rtwlane.sys and appexDrv.sys as the only 2 3rd party drivers in the stack text. As such, they're the most likely to be at fault.

How does the user connect to the satellite? Through the ethernet port? Through wireless?
What is the satellite service that is used?

As the system works fine both wired and wireless (and if he connects to the satellite internet using either wired or wireless) - then it's likely to not be the system. I don't see any special software for the satellite internet, so I have to wonder if that's the cause here - but knowing the satellite provider will help us to troubleshoot the connection there.

Just as a quick hunch, try this:
Anti-Virus Removal:
Please do the following:
- un-install the McAfee from your system (you can reinstall it, if so desired, when we're done troubleshooting)
- remove any remnants of McAfee using this free tool: How to uninstall or reinstall supported McAfee products using the Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR) (This link has changed a lot. If it doesn't work, search for McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool)
- IMMEDIATELY enable Windows Defender and the Windows Firewall, then check to ensure that the Windows Firewall is turned on.
- perform a full system scan to ensure that no malware has snuck onto your system while the anti-virus was malfunctioning.
- check to see if this fixes the BSOD's
NOTE: NEVER run more than 1 anti-virus, firewall, Internet Security/Security Center application at the same time.

Hi John,

I've already given the computer back to the guy. I ran out of ideas and he needed it back to do his paperwork. But in case this comes up for someone else, I'll provide the rest of the information.

Our satellite provider here is Datacom. I don't know what he used on other boats. There is no special software required to hook up to it. Other than computers with serious virus issues, we've always been a plug & play setup.

Everytime he tried to connect to a wireless network, his computer would crash and output the BSOD. Only way he could connect was Ethernet, but would have limited sporadic, and completely random access to websites.

My advice to him was to take it back to Office Depot and ask them to reset it to factory setup. I don't know if that will help, but it's my last option for him. He doesn't have his Office disc, so we can't do it out here.

I'm sorry for using up your time on an unresolved issues, but really appreciate the assistance.

Thank you,
Tim
