Solved BSOD before and after reformat - ntfs.sys

Hey all

I had been getting a few different BSODs on my newly put together computer. I unfortunately did not save the error codes for them so I can't tell you exactly what they were. The BSODs seemingly happened randomly. Sometimes when the computer was asleep, sometimes when I was browsing the net, watching videos or just running utorrent. They would often happen a few times a day, but there was days when I didn't get any.

So far only one of the common BSOD has reoccurred after a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro. The BSOD referred to "ntfs.sys" before restarting. I do not know how to proceed at this stage. I did try a few things before the fresh format, such as updating drivers and running memtest.

FWIW - Most of the parts in my computer are 2nd hand from and purchased from different people. My RAM (patriot g2 4x2gb), MOBO (Asrock extreme4 z77), OS SSD (samsung 830) and my other storage hdds are all second hand.

Attached is the required zip files from the SF Diagnostic tool. I will update the thread if any of the other BSODs pop up again.

Follow this:

If you have an SSD, make sure the following are up to date:

• SSD firmware
• BIOS Version
• Chipset Drivers
• Hard disk controller drivers/SATA drivers
• If you have a Marvell IDE ATA/ATAPI device, make sure the drivers are up to date from the Intel site or Marvell site and not from your motherboard/vendor support site.

Please run these tests and report back the results

1. SFC /scannow to check windows for corruption - SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
2. Disk check for errors on the hard drive - Disk Check

Cheers for the response koolkat. I completed some suggestions and am still finding time to get the rest done. I have attached the crystal disk info screens.

1. SFC /scannow:

There was two errors on its first run

After it fixed those, the second run was error free.

2. Disk check

All ssd and hdd came up error free

3. Troubleshoot applications by a clean boot
Haven't been getting any BSOD today, will definitely do this if they are occurring regularly again

4. Memtest86+
Used this a few weeks back and didn't get any errors but can try again when I get a chance

5. Make a hard drive test
Giving Seatools a go now. The ssd that has the OS on it came up error free, my hdds will take a few more hours to complete and then ill edit with details.

I updated motherboard bios which was one version behind current.
SSD firmware was current.
Chipset drivers current.

Unfortunately I couldn't find drivers for the Asmedia Sata 3 except the ones from the asrock motherboard web page. My OS SSD is definately plugged into intel sata3 port and I am pretty sure my HDDs went into intel ports also, but I could be wrong. Same for the Asmedia usb 3.0 (don't have any external hdds but I do have some other peripherals installed)

I also didn't really know how to go about finding the latest intel hdd/sata drivers either. The intel sata drivers section was a bit confusing. I have a z77 board made by asrock.

p.s I can't believe all the info available on this site and in the forums. Crazy.

Edit: Seatools finished and all drives passed "long generic" test

You managed to boot after the BSOD I guess? If not, boot into Advanced Boot Options and opt for Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced).

Yours a desktop PC. Sleep or hibernation is not needed at all for it, as it runs from external source of power. Disable it following Hibernate - Enable or Disable.

Then upload your MSINFO32.nfo file.

1. Click on the start button
2. Type "msinfo32" (without quotes) in the search bar of the start menu, click the resulting link. It will open the System Information window.
3. File>Save. In the "File Name" filed, put "MSINFO32" (without Quote), give the save location to desktop, and click the "save" button.
4. Give the time for processing, it will save a .nfo file on your desktop.
5. Zip it, and upload it following the instruction.
