Solved BSOD with new SSD - "WHEA Uncorrectable Error"

Hey everyone, I'm very concerned about this new SSD I just installed and it's worrying me quite a bit.

Just installed an OCZ Agility 3 120GB and did a clean install of Windows 8 on it. Previously I had a Seagate 1TB HDD with no problems.

After the new drive was installed, after a short period of use I randomly got the BSOD "WHEA Uncorrectable Error". Right before the freeze occurs the entire computer froze for a few moments (mouse wouldn't move) and then the screen appeared. I wasn't doing anything at the time other than looking at the "Personalize" Windows screen (right click on desktop, Personalize)

I've attached the SevenForums diagnostic tool zip file

Nothing is new in the PC aside from the SSD so I am 95% confident the issues stem from it.

PC is

CPU: Intel Core i7 920
GPU: Zotac GTX 670
MOBO: ASUS P6T (this one: ASUS - Motherboards- P6T )
SSD: OCZ Agility 3 120GB SSD
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200rpm
PSU: Corsair TX750 power supply

Thank you for any help and I will gladly answer questions. I didn't install any drivers other than Graphics and Sound drivers and let Win8 handle all the rest, because I didn't know what to install. If anyone could provide some tips on what to install, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Please help me understand what's going on :(

  1. Make sure your BIOS is up to date. Your BIOS is dated 03/08/2010.
  2. Check if there's an update firmware for the SSD.

Hi, thank you for the response.

Unfortunately because the motherboard is rather old this is latest and best version of the BIOS, and there has not been a new BIOS revision since from after 2010 ...

I just updated the SSD firmware from 2.22 -> 2.25 (from OCZ Toolbox: Firmware & BIOS Updates ). Release notes don't seem to contain any fix for an issue like this though, they mention something about "Fixed a SATA error recovery sequence coming out of PS1". No idea what that means though? Will see if the behaviour continues...

I also updated this driver called ATK0110 which was dated from 2005. The latest version of this for the motherboard was 2009, so I installed that just now. Lastly I installed "Intel INF Driver Update" version 9.4 which I believe is the latest. Not sure if there's anything else I can update/what to update.

Any hints as to what the BSOD is saying exactly?

Thanks for any help.

There's no information in the crash dump related to your BSOD. All it said is: GenuineIntel which does not tell us anything. The crash dump only gives us a glue where the problem might be, sometimes it gives you good hint, others just don't tell you anything, that's why I did not mention it. However, update the firmware for the SSD is the good step. Let us wait and see if the problem re-occurs.
Cheers !!!

The Agility is an iffy SSD. Many people had problems with it. If you can, I would exchange it for a Vertex or Vector.

I have 4 OCZ SSDs (3 Vertex and 1 Vector). So I follow the OCZ stories always closely. I never had any problems with My OCZs and the oldest one is from 2008.

Unfortunately I am not too surprised to hear this, as the Agility 3 is a very, very affordable SSD so I suppose it is reasonable to assume that it is built less rugged compared to its higher-tier brethren. Also unfortunately, I can only exchange/RMA for the same product in case of defectiveness...

topgundcp, whs, thank you for your assistance thus far. Should I run into a further BSOD-related issue with this drive I will post here and let you guys know.

Since the time of the original post I've yet to encounter a BSOD or issue (knock on wood) -- in case anyone else has a similar issue to me, I'll post exactly what it is that I did since the time of the BSOD till now:

-> Updated Agility 3 firmware from 2.22 to 2.25
-> Installed latest Intel Chipset INF Installation Utility drivers
-> Disabled ACPI 2.0 in the P6T BIOS (I did this because between my previous installation of Windows 8 on my old HDD vs. my current Windows 8 SSD install, this was the only BIOS setting I had changed. So as a precaution, I reverted it to imitate the BIOS settings I've always been using.)
-> Updated insanely old ATK0110 driver (2005) to the latest version on the P6T webpage (2009)
-> I also installed the latest JMicron RAID drivers since the P6T has this device and I did not have the drivers for it installed. I do not use RAID, but my previous HDD install had the drivers for this installed.

I would say these steps are worth trying for any P6T owner who has just upgraded to an SSD.

Thanks again for the help guys, will continue to monitor things and report back if needed. The Agility 3 itself seems to be performing quite well and is giving me great ATTO and AS SSD benchmark results.

Seeing as it's been okay for over 24 hours, I will mark this thread as 'solved' for now.

Cheers!

EDIT: Oh I left out something that might be crucial! I also disabled dynamic tick in Windows 8, which is talked about further in this article: Fix for Windows 8 Hanging and Freezing - Blog - Oscar Cao

The BSOD shown there is the exact one I got myself.
