Repeated crashes/no wireless connections

My partner's laptop was bought 16 Nov 2012 with Win 8 installed. It repeatedly crashes, initially (4 days after purchase) with DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE and subsequently with BAD_POOL_CALLER or BAD_POOL_HEADER. It restarts OK but with no wireless connections. The wireless connection eventually comes back after a number of restarts. Any ideas what's going on here? Info attached.

All BSOD's are caused by rtwlane.sys which is a driver for your Realtek RTL8723AE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC and that would explain why you have no wireless connection. Please go to Official Toshiba Support | Toshiba and download the latest driver then install it.

This issue returns every time there is a Windows update. Last time, I fixed it by installing a newer version of the Realtek wireless LAN driver. This time there doesn't appear to be a newer version. (BTW It's difficult to work out which driver version should be installed. Toshiba's US site doesn't recognise a UK model or serial number. Their UK site directs me to an older version of the driver. If I install that Windows doesn't load at all.)

Windows Update has a bad track record of installing (presumably updated) Realtek LAN and WiFI drivers that don't work. I'd like to have a buck for every time it did that until I turned off the option to allow Windows Update to install updated drivers. My advice is to go back to the original drivers or the ones that last worked and stay with them until they no longer work.

I'd already tried reinstalling the old Realtek driver and got the same error. The dump is pointing the finger at ndis.sys, which seems to have been updated in the latest lot of Windows updates.
