Random Freeze/Hang/Lag

Hi,

I upgraded my laptop from Win 7 Home Premium x64 to Win 8 Pro x64.
I am an university student so had to do it as my course required me too.

I never had any errors or any bugs while using Win 7, so I assume that mean my hardware is not defective.
But Win 8 in beginning crashed a lot to BSOD and tons of other problems, now after Windows updates its comparatively stable.

PROBLEM - For about a last month or longer it has started freezing. NOT BSOD error or any other error. It would just freeze/hang/lag. No inputs would work at all. No mouse, keyboard commands work at all. HDD indication light doesn't blink anymore, although I can hear the HDD spinning, indicating that the Win has crashed. Freezing problem is not related to any software in particular, system has crashed so many times with different software running at different times.

I've installed all the windows updates, and my laptop's make is TOSHIBA. So while I upgraded OS, I used their upgrade assistant software that updated all my drivers to the Win 8 Pro x64 compatible drivers.

Here is the screenshot of my reliability history, most of red x you can see are due to windows crash. Since windows froze I had to force shut down. In reliability history it just says Windows stopped working and that shutdown was unexpected.

Also this morning it crashed while I was using Microsoft Bing Travel App.
Below is the 20 second video of it frozen. Video is downscaled to 240x320 - 2.5 MB. Ignore the audio.
Click here for link to my Google Drive where you can see the video.

There are no files at all in my "C:\Windows\Minidump" directory. I didn't delete any files, its just nothing is there.
Feel free to ask for any additional info if needed.

Please help, thank you.

Thanks for replying topgundcp.

Yes I do have latest version of the BIOS (2.80) installed.

Below is the image of TOSHIBA HWSetup, that shows you the installed BIOS version and allows you to configure the computer.

You never know. Hardware can be good today but does not mean will be tomorrow, it can go bad anytime.
Since you did not have a crash dump for us to analyze but it would help if you can go ahead and use http://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...e-screen-death-bsod-posting-instructions.html which will give us some additional info about your laptop. For now We have to start by isolating problems.

  1. Open the elevated command prompt and run: chkdsk C: /r /f
System will reboot and start checking your C: Drive. It will take a while
  2. Open the elevated command prompt and run: sfc /scannow . This will fix any corrupted system files. You might have to run this multiple times until you get a message: Windows did not find any integrity violation.

I agree with you on the hardware part that it can be damaged over the time. Although besides this freezing issue there are no indication I am aware of that proves that hardware is damaged. My laptop is little over a year old.

Although all my drivers were up to date, I re installed all the drivers and the BIOS, with the Toshiba's upgrade utility software.
I want to see if the problem gets fixed or not. If it doesn't then I'll start posting here again and apply the fixes you have suggested above.

Thank You for your support.
