Your BIOS dates from 2010. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

From what I'm seeing here, this is most likely a hardware problem. Please start with these free diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thanks John for your help.

I updated the drivers yesterday and also checked the bios and there is not a newer update.

I think upgrading to windows 64bit and upgrading to 8gb of ram at the same time has muddied the water. I went back to the original 4gb ram and the machine has not crashed again since.

So I am not sure if the problem is the machine having problems addressing over 4gb of ram or that some of the ram does not mix.

I put 4gb new in and took the old 4gb out and that works but old and new does not work together reliably.

I am now going to try 6gb and 8gb of new ram.

I think maybe one of the new modules is faulty although memtest is not showing it.

Moral of the story only ever do one update at a time.

I will let you know how I get on unless you have any other ideas.
Regards
Adrian

If MemTest86+ doesn't show errors - try running Prime95 in "Blend" mode. That'll stress the RAM and may generate errors even when MemTest86+ doesn't. Prime95

Ok I have rran this with 6gb of new meory in and the pc did not crash but several of the workers failed with hardware faults, but I cant find a file called stress.txt to see what the problem is. I have attached a screen shot.

There is a results.txt file and that says
[Tue Mar 19 10:23:46 2013]
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.49609375, expected less than 0.4

Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4

I do not really understand what this means

Those are errors. "FATAL ERROR" and "Hardware failure detected" are the clues here.

If running the Blend test, then they are most likely in the RAM (memory). The other 2 possibilities are the CPU cache and the memory controller (but they are less likely than a RAM problem when running the Blend test).

Now try it on each stick in slot #1 (using anti-static precautions) to determine which sticks are good (no errors) and which are bad (those with errors)
Then try one of the known good sticks in each slot to see if any of the slots are bad.

FWIW - there's not much else in the stress.txt file - and I summarized what I knew in the webpage that I pointed you at.

Ok I tried each of the sim in each of the slots and they all pass, so I do not think it is memory as I ahve the 8gb of new memory in and still BSOD. I have recaptured the crash log and included below

Then run Prime95 using Small FFT's and Large FFT's (along with the Blend test)
Run all at the same time to be sure the system is equally stressed.

Find out which takes the longest to spit out errors - and which takes the shortest time to spit out errors

Also, run the free CPU tests here: Additional Hardware Diagnostics

Hi John

Thanks for your continued help

Do you still think this is memory from the sf I uploaded, as any combination of 4gb seems to work fine, it is only if you go over 4gb that the things starts to crash, I have also tried 4gb in channel one and 2 and it makes no difference. Are all the drivers OK now?

My Computer

System One

  • OS
    win 8 64 bit
SPOILER ALERT - read down, I believe the issue is that the system is only designed for 4gB of RAM

[DEL]Sorry, I got busy and skipped attaching the results from the latest SF upload.
Yes, I still think that this is a hardware problem - and that memory is the most likely cause (although the BIOS/mobo could also be at fault).

Just thinking out loud here - but the OEM power supply is awfully anemic for this system (350 watts), and will be even more borderline if you've added equipment to it. Have you added anything else to the system (hardware - inside or outside of the case)?[/DEL]

According to this page: Computer memory upgrades for Dell Vostro 420 Tower Desktop/PC from Crucial.com
the Vostro 420 tower has a max of 8 gB over 4 slots

BUT, according to this page: Memory Search | Kingston
the Vostro 420 tower has a max of 4 gB over 4 slots

AND, according to this link: Dell Vostro 420 Memory Upgrades - Guaranteed Compatible Memory for your Dell Vostro 420 from Corsair
the Vostro 420 has a max of 4 gB over 4 slots

About 2/3 of the way down this page: Vostro 420 Tower Desktop Details | Dell
it says 4 gB - so I'd take that as the limit here.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thanks John, I found found a number of forums where people sya the are running this machine in 64 bit mode with 8gb of ram successfully, so this would tend to suggest that the dell limit is a marketing limit rather than a physical one. I ahve updated the driver you suggested and then i am going to have one last try with 8gb of new memory and see what happens I think.

I will report back on what happens.
