Solved Multiple BSOD Issue

Hello,

I would like to start by saying that I have read the BSOD thread and followed all the steps I can.

I am running a Windows 8 system and a few days ago I started having BSODs almost constantly. They occur mostly on boot, where the computer will freeze up at varying points between the welcome screen pre-login and when I try to open the first application. On very rare occasions I am able to open an application before it happens, but it is pointless.

I am currently posting from safe mode with networking because it does not have any problems, but this will not let me install the tools that you recommend for reading BSOD .dmp files, or any of the other tools I have tried to get access to in order to read them, such as the Windows 8 SDK.

The BSOD errors I have had are MEMORY_MANAGEMENT ERROR, CRITICAL_ERROR, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA and NTFS_FILE_SYTEM_ERROR or names similar to those at least. From that I am assuming it is a memory issue, and because the system works in safe mode I'm assuming it may be a driver error of some description.

I have tried performing a clean boot and then disabling/enabling different drivers to work out the origin from process of elimination but due to only being able to get that far once every 10 boots at best this process was almost impossible.

I had previously used McAfee for my anti-virus as it came with the laptop and as the BSOD issues started when it expired I uninstalled it but have not yet managed to install AVG.

I am running a standard Acer Aspire V3-571 with no overclocking or memory alterations at all and have run MalwareBytes so it is nothing along those lines.

I think that is all the information I have to give although please ask for any information you need to help. There is a link to the appropriate MEMORY.dmp file from my system in a zip my dropbox here (because it was too large to be an attachment here) so that hopefully somebody else can examine and extract the information I can't get a hold of.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

I just had a new BSOD there with the error

driver irql not less or equal

I tried the driver verifier posted in similar threads before this came up and then my laptop rebooted into an automatic repair which I have tried to no success before.

Try a clean boot to see if you can figure out the offending item:
How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8
Perform a clean startup to determine whether background programs are interfering with your game or program

The above are Win7/Vista articles - but the procedure is the same in Win8

If you have difficulties doing it in Win8, have a look at this search: https://www.google.com/search?q=win...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a (the first 2 links are the ones that I posted above).

Also, you can zip up and upload the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump folder (that has the memory dumps)
Also, please do this:
MSINFO32:
Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
Also, save a copy as a .txt file and include it also (it's much more difficult to read, but we have greater success in getting the info from it).

If you're having difficulties with the format, please open an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt and type "msinfo32 /nfo C:\Users\Public\Desktop\TEST.NFO" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then navigate to the C:\Users\Public\Desktop directory to retrieve the TEST.NFO file. If you have difficulties with making this work, please post back.

I will try the clean boot again, but as I said in my first post it is actually a rare occurrence to make it as far as that as it only boots properly without freezing in safe mode.

However, the other things should be very achievable, and I will post them up as soon as I can get back to my laptop today.

You can setup clean boot in Safe Mode - then attempt to boot into normal mode with it.
Then go back into Safe Mode to change the settings as needed.

I'm having an issue getting into safe mode with Windows 8. From everything I've read online and experienced, it seems like the OS has to decide for itself something is wrong before you can boot to safe mode which appears to me to be completely arbitrary. Since my last post I've had over 30 boots, all of which have frozen and none of which have given me the option for safe mode.

Is there a way similar to old systems that you can force it to select safe mode on boot? Thanks for the help so far.

Ok thank you for the help. I have managed to zip the minidump files and they are now located here.

In terms of the clean boot, I followed the steps, disabled all non-Microsoft services, and will post another reply shortly with the results. If this fixes the problem then I will try to find the problem software by process of elimination.

I have found that the clean boot is the most valuable tool that I have for fixing boot problems in Windows.

Lot's of NTFS.sys mentions in the stack text and numerous different BSOD error codes. This, IMO, usually points to a hard drive issue. Try this free diagnostic: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thank you very much for that. I'm currently going to get a CD so that I can boot with the hard drive diagnostics.

I must admit I had discounted a hard drive error due to how perfectly the system works in safe mode and had assumed that when it continued freezing in normal operation even after all non-Microsoft options had been disabled that it must be a Windows 8 issue.

Although actually by the time I managed to boot safe mode again to come and tell you that the problem had persisted even after a totally clean boot you had already posted that, so I'll try the diagnostic, and update the drivers as best I can and come back to give you the results.

The suggestion for a hard drive diagnostic was just one of the many things that could be suggested.
Basically, what I see is an issue that shows that ntfs.sys is involved and that there are many different BSOD errors being shown.

The many different errors are suggestive of a low-level problem, such as:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
- overclocking - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

Since NTFS.sys is involved:
1) It's a Windows driver, so it's the least likely of the 3 different problems that BSOD's are due to (3rd party drivers, hardware, Windows drivers)
2) Since it's NTFS.sys, it's involved with how the file system is stored on the disk - which leads me to wonder about the storage sub-system (of which the hard drive is a part)
3) Driver Verifier enabled dumps didn't point at 3rd party drivers.

So, most likely it's a hardware problem - and I suspect the hard drive. But I have many other things that we can look at if it turns out that it isn't the hard drive.

Well thank you very much for your help. I've been having some serious trouble with the booting from disc as well, I assume that's more of an Acer issue though. I'll get back to you on that.

OK. After having run the Seagate Seatools on my Toshiba hard drive for one short test (fail) and two long test, both of which found 5 errors total out of the almost billion LBA. I don't know if the graphical version of this gives more detail, but I'm afraid that's all I can say about it because I had to use the text-based version.

I can say that the attempted repair failed, but it was very happy to run the test and SMART has not been tripped. I don't know how large the error spaces are, unless of course each is 48-bit because that's how it's addressed. SeaTools doesn't exactly give a lot of context to its data.

Are there any other hard drive diagnostics you'd recommend, particularly to determine the severity of these 5 errors and if they can be recovered. Obviously I don't know, but from Google searches people seem to be getting forced to run the test multiple times because they continuously get over 100 errors multiple times so the check stops, so 5 doesn't seem too severe to me.

Just FYI - at work if we get errors, we replace the drive. A 500 gB SATA laptop drive goes for about $70 (US) - it's worth not having to wonder if the drive is going to die on you at any moment. You can probably find one for less online - but continue reading before you buy one.....

FIRST PRIORITY is to do a backup. As I stated before, there's no telling when the drive is going to completely die.

Don't forget to find/make the recovery disks before putting the new drive in (or order them from Acer).

If the system is less than one year old, this is likely a warranty repair (no cost to you). When we do it at work, we require the owner to supply the recovery disks - and we do the diagnostics and hard drive replacement.

As for only 5 errors - it depends on where the errors are (and if the firmware on the drive marks them off). But look at it this way:
- if this is your checkbook and the errors are in the cents/pennies column, it's probably not a big problem.
- but if this is your checkbook and the errors are in the dollars/pounds column, it's probably a big problem.
Unfortunately, you can't tell what "column" that the errors are in - so for your peace of mind a new hard drive is advisable.

Good luck!

Ok, well if that's what it is, the laptop is under warranty. It's just miscellaneous software errors aren't covered under that, so they'd have charged me no doubt some crazy amount to do a software check before sending it back to me saying it wasn't a software problem.

Thanks for all your help. Now for the painful painful wait while the company replaces stuff.
