Hi,
My system was running fine with Windows 7, then I did an in-place upgrade to Windows 8, i.e. installed on top of Windows 7. The install went smoothly, but a few days later, it started crashing. I've updated all my drivers, and tested RAM using Memtest, and CPU using Orthos [Prime95]. I would much appreciate some help with this.
I'm attaching the zip file created by SF Diagnostic Tool. I looked at the dumps using WhoCrashed, but they give no solution, here's what they say [same message for the last 4 crashes]:
This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x7A040)
Bugcheck code: 0x133 (0x0, 0x283, 0x282, 0x0)
Error: DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION
file path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
company: Microsoft Corporation
description: NT Kernel & System
Bug check description: The DPC watchdog detected a prolonged run time at an IRQL of DISPATCH_LEVEL or above.
This appears to be a typical software driver bug and is not likely to be caused by a hardware problem. This problem might be caused by a thermal issue.
The crash took place in the Windows kernel. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver that cannot be identified at this time.

For starters:
At work we start all repairs with a set of diagnostics. Often they find problems that weren't even expected. It's a waste of time to try to fix software on a system that has hardware problems.
Please try these free diagnostics for starters: Initial Hardware Diagnostics
Also, please ensure that you have ALL available Windows Updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

If you haven't run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant yet, please do so. It's free here: Upgrade to Windows 8 - Microsoft Windows

Your BIOS dates from 2011. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

You have 4 hard drives. What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply?

Please uninstall Gigabyte ET6 (EasyTune6) and Gigabyte Easy Saver. They are known to cause BSOD's in some Windows systems.

The most common cause of the BSOD's is listed as jraid.sys. Please replace your JMicron drivers with a fresh copy.

Acronis drivers date from as early as 2007 - please ensure that this program is Win8 compatible. The 2008 and earlier drivers are known to cause BSOD's on Windows systems.

AMD OverDrive (AODDriver2.sys) is either a stand-alone application, or a component of the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. This driver is known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems.
Please un-install all AMD/ATI video stuff from Control Panel...Programs...Un-install a program
Then, download (but DO NOT install) a fresh copy of the ATI drivers from Global Provider of Innovative Graphics, Processors and Media Solutions | AMD (in the upper right corner of the page)
Use this procedure to install the DRIVER ONLY: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure - Sysnative Forums

If the device (AODDriver or AODDriver4.01) remains a problem, open Device Manager, select the "View" item.
Then select "Show hidden devices" and scroll down to the Non-Plug and Play Drivers section.
Locate the AODDriver entry, right click on it and select "Un-install". Reboot for changes to take affect.
Sometimes the driver remains and continues to cause BSOD's. If this is the case for you, post back and we'll give further instructions for safely removing it.

If overclocking, please stop. Remove the overclock and return the system to stock/standard values while we're troubleshooting. Once the system is stable again, feel free to resume the overclocking.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thank you. I'm working on it...

@usasma, aka John,
Thanks very much for your detailed analysis. I've been working on implementing several of your suggestions. I had another BSOD today, but this time when I looked at it in WhoCrashed, instead of the usual generic result, it specifically named jraid.sys as being the cause of the crash, which is the driver you named.
I have the latest driver installed, and have uninstalled and re-installed it in case it had gotten corrupted. The reason I have this driver on my system is because I have a PCIe drive controller with a JMicron chip on it, just so I can use a couple of PATA hard drives, I don't use RAID at all. I think I may have found a way to get this card to work without causing a problem, but I won't feel confident that the problem is solved until I can go at least 10 days without a crash. I will post an update as things develop. Thanks again!

Although the jraid.sys driver is the most common listed cause - this does not mean that it's to blame. There are many different things that can cause this.

The most common reason is that there is a problem with the driver - but if that's been fixed (by replacing it like you have), then we have to look at other possibilities.

Have you finished implementing the rest of my suggestions? If not, which ones have you done?

Could you please describe the method that you've found?

John,
I've gone 2-1/2 weeks without a crash, so I'm pretty confident the problem has been solved. Here's what happened: I have an external hard drive, a Seagate Free Agent Pro with USB 2.0 & eSATA ports. I didn't know when I bought it, but the eSATA implementation is poorly done on this model, which is well-documented here: The Noegruts Blog: Seagate FreeAgent Pro eSATA problems

That drive has always had detection issues when using eSATA, but with some hassle of disconnecting/reconnecting or cycling power on the unit, I was able to get it to work on WinXP and Win 7, and the transfer speed is 3x as fast as USB 2.0. I usually only connect the drive when I want to do a disk image backup, and I'd been connecting it to an eSATA port on a JMicron-based controller card. My last crash happened while the drive was connected, just after the computer came out of sleep mode. That was when WhoCrashed named jraid.sys as the cause. Then it finally struck me: maybe it's that external drive that has been causing my BSOD's. So I stopped using the drive with eSATA, and have not had a crash since. It seems Windows 8 is more sensitive to that flakey eSATA port on the drive than Win XP or Win 7 were. The drive doesn't cause crashes when connected via USB.

I can't say for sure that the external drive was the cause of all my crashes, because I also updated some drivers as you suggested, and used Autoruns to disable some other drivers that shouldn't have been loading, e.g. a couple of Asus drivers you listed that must have been left over from when I was running Win 7 on my previous motherboard [my current installation was a Win 8 upgrade done on top of Win 7].

So I'm marking this thread as solved. I've noticed you post a lot on this forum and some others, and no doubt you have saved a lot of souls who were lost in PC hell! Thanks very much for all your attention on this. Larry
