Windows 8 BSOD (WHEA Uncorrectable Error)

Been having some issues recently with a recurring BSOD, and would love to get it sorted out. Happens frequently when browsing and using VLC, though that is probably due to probability (that's what I spend most of my time on the PC doing).

Your BIOS dates from 2011. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:
There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

    Here's some suggestions:
    - Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
    - Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website)
    - Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
    - Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
    - Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard!
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.
    - Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
It's my opinion that SSD's aren't reliable enough (with current hardware) to be used on a system that needs to work reliably. Until I see reliability I will not recommend, nor will I use, SSD's for critical applications.
06 Dec 2011 - This post tends to confirm issues with certain SSD chipsets and certain controllers - [SOLVED] cant find the cause of BSOD F4 - Tech Support Forum
29 May 2012 - The frequency of BSOD's with SSD's seems to have been decreasing over the last several months. It may be approaching time to re-evaluate my stand on their suitability for use in production systems.
10 Nov 2012 - I'm seeing an upswing in SSD errors - but most appear due to older storage controller drivers. I strongly suggest NOT using storage controller drivers that don't date from 2012 (if none are available, don't connect an SSD to that controller)
05 Jan 2013 - very interesting post about difficulties with the Marvell controllers even when not connected to the SSD drives: https://www.eightforums.com/bsod-cra...tml#post169956
This device is disabled. Is this deliberate? If so, why? (it's your nVidia High Definition Audio):
LX01A-1 (NVIDIA High Definition Audio) SWD\MMDEVAPI\{0.0.0.00000000}.{EF18548C-03D8-4203-8085-5DE8B918258D} This device is disabled.
Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

The memory dumps point to a low-level error. This can include:
    - borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
    - BIOS issues (check for updates at the motherboard manufacturer's website)
    - overclocking - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
    - compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
    - low-level driver problems
    - or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

In this case, it's a CPU cache error that's reported - so I'd also suggest these hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics Please let us know the results of the tests.

    Windows 8

I updated my MoBo firmware to be greeted with the BSOD on every startup. I have formatted my SSD and have since been trying to reinstall Windows 8 (only to have the BSOD during the install process). Since then, I've swapped out the motherboard for a new one, and continued getting the BSOD. Isolated my SSD and HDD and still received the BSOD and swapped out my DVD drive and still (!!) received the BSOD. Then removed the GPU to rely on the onboard graphics and the problem still occurs. I have also redownloaded my copy of Windows from the MS site to ensure it wasn't just a bad burn.

I suppose it could be a CPU problem, though I ran stress-testing on that prior to updating my MoBo firmware and it produced no problems. So I'm at a loss what to do at this point!

Looks like all that's left is:
    PSU
    RAM
    CPU
    Incompatibility with Windows 8

    1) To test the PSU, remove all non-essential items from the system and see if the BSOD's become less frequent.
    2) To test the RAM, run MemTest86+ and Prime95 (listed here: Hardware Diagnostics )
    3) To test the CPU, run several of the stress tests at the link listed above

If unable to get into Windows, there are several free, bootable CD's out there for running these tests (but I'm not familiar with any of them).

Run the Windows Upgrade Advisor (once you're in Windows) in order to see if the system is compatible with Windows 8. I just found that my old laptop isn't compatible after several days of trying to get things to work correctly on it. I still have to update the BIOS (mine dates from 2008), but it's not likely to solve my problems - only a new system will :0(
