BSOD Windows 8

After installing and running Windows 8 just fine since October, three weeks ago my computer suddenly started with the bsod. It will happen multiple times per day, and there is nothing consistent about what I am doing.

I have tried updating all the drivers and even used Windows 8's "Refresh" button, losing all my programs, but failing to fix the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you scanned your system for malware recently? I generally start with that when I see this sort of error (STOP 0xc000021a). Try a couple of these free scans: Free Online AntiMalware Resources

Your BIOS dates from 2009. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

No Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 40 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

You have an Asus P5QL PRO motherboard:
FWIW - I've seen a lot of issues with the Asus P5 series of boards. I usually recommend this:
- DO NOT use the AUTO setting for memory. Go to the RAM manufacturer's website and get the recommended settings for the RAM. Then set those settings manually in the BIOS
- one person with a 2009 BIOS has experienced success by updating the BIOS. This is dangerous and one simple mistake can easily damage your motherboard so it won't work. Be VERY, VERY CAREFUL!!!
- one person reports bad caps ( Badcaps.net - How To Identify ) in this post: [SOLVED] Bad overclock and now can't load windows 7 - Tech Support Forum

As of late June 2012 - I haven't seen many issues with these boards over the last several months.

You have the Asus ATK0110 ACPI Utility driver (ASACPI.sys) that dates from 2004. This is a known cause of BSOD's and must be updated to the 2009 version. Check for this at the Asus download website for your motherboard - either under the ATK section or the Utility section. If unable to locate it, please post back for other suggestions.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run these free hardware diagnostics: Hardware Diagnostics. Let us know the results and we can move on from there.

Thank you for that treasure trove of information! I will get on it and report back when I'm done!

* - I just wanted to edit this post and report that I followed your instructions and so far I have experienced no crashes or issues. I did the following steps:

- Malware scan: one obscure piece of malware.
- Install Windows updates: All 40+ Now it reports none needed.
- Updated BIOS: This was nerve racking but successful
- ACPI Utility, I THINK it was updated (I used slim driver) and now it is no longer dated 2004!

I will post again in a few days if nothing new happens to close the thread. A big thank you so far!

Oh no!

Well, I was literally about to close this thread at the end of the day, but all of a sudden I got a random blue screen. :-(

Any help would be appreciated! My system seems unstable. At random times my screen has frozen and then the sound skipped a few times, but it seemed to work itself out.

All in all though, MUCH better than it was before I made those changes!

Just FYI - if you go about 2 weeks without a BSOD, then we'll start to consider it solved.

BIOS still seems to date from 2009 - there may be a possibility that this system won't work properly with Win8.

Uninstall Asus PCProbe (if you don't have that, then uninstall Asus AISuite). Do this BEFORE you do the next step (the ASACPI.sys driver)

ASACPI.sys still dates from 2004.
Go here: ASUS - - ASUS P5QL PRO
Select Win7 32 bit for the OS
Go to the Utilities section
Download the first item in that list (ATK0110
driver for WindowsXP/Vista/Win7 32&64-bit)
Extract the archive (double click on the zip file)
Double click on each directory until you've double clicked on the "32" directory
Inside the 32 directory is a file named AsAcpiIns.exe - double click on it and let it be for 10 minutes (you won't get any notification that it's done).

WinRing0.sys is also mentioned in this dump file. Many different programs center around the using of the WinRing libraries (RealTemp, Corsair Link2 (known BSOD issues w/Win8), Razer GameBooster, etc) Please uninstall the program from your system as it's drivers date from 2008.

Don't worry about the other drivers listed below. This stuff should fix the issues (IMO). If not, then we'll deal with the other drivers later on.
