Windows 8 PC hanging

Hey all,

Lately my Windows 8 PC has been mysteriously hanging. I can still click icons and it would show the spinning wheel but programs won't load up (i.e. Chrome, task manager, etc) nor am I able to shut down the PC. I'll click "shut down" the spinning wheel shows up and then nothing. I sorta noticed this after I did a Windows update but I also did a system restore to before the updates but no I'm still experiencing this issue. I don't normally turn off this PC, it runs all day and night and usually acts up after a day or two which then I have to do a hard reset. I have all my power option set so that the PC doesn't sleep after a certain time or the hard drive doesn't turn off after a set time. No other programs were installed after the updates to Window and I've tried using the startup repair in the advanced settings in Windows 8, no problems were detected. I've scanned for malware with Malwarebytes and viruses with Avast and nothing turns up.

Not sure how to intepret the event logs but I have a few screens of it. I noticed the haning problem when I went to use the PC at around 9:30 and going into the event viewer>system I see two errors occurring at around 8:30, not sure if it's related. Thanks for any solution anyone can offer.

Please do this:

- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
- save the file as Admin.evtx
- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).

I did a fresh format and install of Windows 8 64 Bit Pro. Sorry but I couldn't live without a start button so I have installed the Start8 start menu which is great. I try sometimes not to use it but find metro frustrating to find programs as I have many. I will use Metro for apps only and desktop of serious computing.
Just FYI - an Event ID 41 is Windows saying that it doesn't know why it shut down.
This can be due to overheating, overclocking, broken hardware, or other events that bypass the normal Windows error handling.

We'll need the info from the reports to dig into this a bit more.

Sorry for the very late reply and thanks a bunch for all the help. I actually gave one more try at Windows restore to a much earlier point (before all my Windows update and the uninstalling of Java). Seems like the recent critical updates for Win 8 is causing some instability. So far my the PC has been running without a hitch for two days straight now.
