Windows 8 Pro Regularly Freezing

Hi All.

I have a home-built Windows 8 Pro machine and am experiencing regular freezes (no BSOD) usually about 15 to 30 minutes after power up. When I reboot (hard reset) my PC is usually stable for the next few hours at least.

I cannot see anything in the event logs that leads to an answer so am hoping that someone here can shed some light.

Log files attached.

Kind regards,
John.

Hi examining the mini-dumps I have found some out of date drivers on your system you should update to Windows 8 64bit versions or un-install/remove if un-needed:

hcw95bda.sys - Hauppauge MOD7700 Tuner Driver: Driver Reference Table
hcw95rc.sys - Hauppauge MOD7700 IR Driver: Driver Reference Table
mv_process.sys - Marvell Semiconductor: mv_process.sys Details. Is this file safe? Check the directory (cannot find much information on this you might want to un-install it)

Please update your Marvell driver by using your motherboard manufacturers website, this should include the Marvell Storage Utility and Marvell SATA Controller Driver, the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology, Hot Fix and anything else you might consider you need to update:

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - GA-Z77X-D3H (rev. 1.0)

Please also make sure you have installed all the latest Windows 8 updates if you have not done so already.

Hi and thanks for the quick reply.

i have removed the Marvell drivers as I no longer use the controller but the Hauppauge ones are needed for an internal tv card. I have reinstalled them anyway. All other mobo and windows drivers etc. are up to date.

Will check for stability tomorrow and post back.

Cheers,
J.

No joy :(

After just 10 mins I had the usual hang. I notice it before it happens because the mouse starts stuttering and a few seconds later it stops completely - along with everything else.

Could it be my SSD (OCZ Octane)? It's on firmware version 1.14 and the only update to the latest version (1.14.1) is a fix for "OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion) Installation Issues".

Any other ideas?

Kind regards,
John.

Sorry that you are still having problems. Sadly even though you re-installed the Hauppauge drivers they could still be causing the problem for you, if they are not Windows 8 compatible no matter many times you re-install them it might not fix the problem. For testing purposes I would un-install/remove them and then see if you get BSODs. I'm not familiar with SSD's but I'll quote something that usasma says on the subject:

There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website)
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself):
Crystal Dew World
- Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard!
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.
- Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
It's my opinion that SSD's aren't reliable enough (with current hardware) to be used on a system that needs to work reliably. Until I see reliability I will not recommend, nor will I use, SSD's for critical applications.
06 Dec 2011 - This post tends to confirm issues with certain SSD chipsets and certain controllers -
[SOLVED] cant find the cause of BSOD F4 - Tech Support Forum
29 May 2012 - The frequency of BSOD's with SSD's seems to have been decreasing over the last several months. It may be approaching time to re-evaluate my stand on their suitability for use in production systems.
10 Nov 2012 - I'm seeing an upswing in SSD errors - but most appear due to older storage controller drivers. Istrongly suggest NOT using storage controller drivers that don't date from 2012 (if none are available, don't connect an SSD to that controller)
05 Jan 2013 - very interesting post about difficulties with the Marvell controllers even when not connected to the SSD drives:

Thanks milw0rm, food for thought and enough to keep me busy when I'm not doing the day job.

It is frustrating that Windows itself isn't giving me a hint as to what is causing the hangs. Nothing in the event logs at the time of the hang and nothing much else to go on, apart from the following System Event (Warning):

The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load for the device WpdBusEnumRoot\UMB\2&37c186b&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN_SMSC&PROD_223_U_HS-CF&REV_3.60#000223223223&0#.

Can't find much on the subject but most guidance seems to suggest I can safely ignore it.

Will work through your checklist.

Thanks again,
J.
