This is the log. It was only installed last week but it was working fine.

I just tried to boot into Windows and it just goes to diagnostic, but fails. I tried advanced options like 'refresh the computer' but that fails and no changes are made. I tried advanced option system restore point also, but on both of the two restore points I can not check the C drive.

I can access essential files from my Ubuntu boot if it help fixing the problem.

CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K 3.4GHz | GPU: Radeon HD 7970 Vortex 2| Mobo: Asus P8Z77-V LX | RAM: Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz
Windows 8 Pro 64 bit

Thanks.

EDIT: It seems reinstalling is not an option for me either? Microsoft site only seem to offer an install exe. No ISO it would seem.

We'll need any memory dump files from C:\Windows\Minidump

Please start with these free bootable diagnostics: Initial Hardware Diagnostics

Please post in the General forums about getting a copy of the ISO - I won't have time to research this for a while (my system is rebooting every 2 hours because I didn't update from the Release Preview)

Hey Znod, thanks for the reply. My problem seems somewhat different as I can access all my C: drive files from Ubuntu like I normally would. However when I try to do the system restore form restore points it won't let me tick the C: drive, it mentions something about it been locked. Any idea what that is about?

Have you backed your files up? I am not optimistic about you getting your drive to function again using standard fixes, although the OP in the thread I linked did under similar circumstances. Did you do the things he did under ubuntu to get his drive going again? If these things don't don't work for you, then I don't have other suggestions in this regard. Are you interesting in reinstalling on the problem drive at this point? You mentioned not having a disc. How did you install in the first place? Do you have an ISO from your original install? You might be able to download it again. The forum has a related tutorial, but the link is not working for me right now.

I was really stupid when I installed Windows (years ago) I did it unpartitioned on a 1TB HDD, which is now practically full. If this ends with me formatting the HDD, I will most definitely partition it first.

I notice the OP in the thread you linked had a different issue, unless I'm misreading it. He said when he got into Ubuntu he could lot see his C drive at all until he used that program. I can access my HDD perfectly fine through Ubuntu.

^This is a picture of what I have from Windows 8 install. It was no ISO but a upgrade exe, it checked that my system is okay to upgrade, I bought it right there and it downloaded and installed. Apparently this can be made into a bootable install DVD, but I don't know how.

I know his problem is different, but he did eventually get his locked drive to work again. But, if you are satisfied that the thread won't help you, then so am I. I have not gone back through the thread in detail. Yes, I see what you have now. When I get properties for my ISO, I see what's below. So, yes, you do have the setup.exe file--and apparently did not save the ISO when installing. As mentioned, it is possible to "redownload" the ISO, but I can't direct you to the related tutorial right now; the link is not working for me at this time. But, if you can get the ISO, then you can create an install DVD or create an install flash drive with it. See the warning on the link about creating a flash drive if running under UEFI (not sure whether you are or are not).

Yes I have now formatted the drive, after making essential backups. I have also made a 40GB partiton for Windows, is this big enough for Windows? I will likely install programs to the other larger partition as I have many games.

40GB should be plenty. The recommendations I have seen are 20GB for 64 bit/16GB for 32 bit. Good luck with your installation.

Man it won't let me install now, it just says unable to install to selected location. I looked it up and apparently I need to disconnect all my other hard drives so the one I want to install Windows to is 'disk 0', not 'disk 1'. seriously now? What is wrong with Microsoft? This is a serious pain. You don't have to do this rubbish on any Linux OS.

Even though it clearly was the last update which broke it.
