Hello.

With increasing regularity, I've been receiving DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION BSODs, crashing my computer. Usually, this tends to happen when a video of some sort is playing, but it also happens at completely unpredictable times, like immediately upon reboot or with no warning at all while sitting idle.
If someone could assist me in remedying this issue, I'd be very thankful.

Also, I'll also occasionally get an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL BSOD. However, it happens much less regularly than the watchdog violation one, and I'm pretty sure all of the recent watchdog violation BSs over the past few days have flushed out any record of an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL one. Regardless, if there's something in all of these records that hints at what might be the cause of that error, too, I would, again, be very appreciative.

Your BIOS dates from 2010. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

Only 2½% free space on your C: drive. Windows needs about 15% free space to function properly. Please free up 15% on your hard drive ASAP.

This appears to be an upgrade install. You may want to consider a clean install in order to keep from bringing all the old problems into your new OS.

There's a lot of video drivers in the stack text - makes me suspect your video card or it's drivers. Please do this: ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

I'll respond to your instructions in turn.

My MoBo is sort of old, so there hasn't been a BIOS update from MSI since 2010. It's as up-to-date as it can be.

I've freed up a lot of HDD space.

I'd be willing to do a fresh install if need be, but, obviously, it would be preferable to end the BSODs without a wipe.

Concerning graphics drivers, though you say that there are a lot of video drivers installed, according to my programs list, there are no ATI drivers installed. I'm not exactly sure how to follow your instructions on this front, as none of the procedures in the link you provided give directions on how to uninstall video drivers that don't register as installed. It assumes that they show up in the Add/Remove Programs list. Any help?

I uninstalled SUPERAntiSpyware, so that should be taken care of.

I also don't have anything by SteelSeries installed, so I'm not certain how to proceed with uninstalling or updating the SAlpham64.sys driver.

Also, I have no idea how to update or uninstall the Rt630x64.sys driver, as the Realtek website is confusing as hell.

Just a general observation here. I'm starting to notice that the fewer 3rd party drivers that appear in the apps output - the more likely it is that this is a low-level problem.

By low-level I mean:
- borked (broken) hardware (several different procedures used to isolate the problem device)
- overclocking - You'll know if you're overclocking or not. If uncertain we can suggest things to check.
- compatibility issues (3rd party hardware/drivers)
- low-level driver problems (mostly 3rd party software/drivers)
- or even malware (scanned for when we ask for hardware diagnostics from Initial Hardware Diagnostics or Hardware Diagnostics ).

I suggest that you perform the free hardware diagnostics listed here: Hardware Diagnostics

I reran the memory dumps from 14 and 15 January - and the same results came up. There are ATI video drivers loaded on your system (and this is for your ATI Radeon HD 4800 video card). If the drivers aren't in Control Panel...Programs and Features - then install a fresh copy from the ATI website. If it asks, do not let it install AMD Overdrive (don't worry if it doesn't ask about it).

Have you used any gaming peripherals in the past? Keyboards, mice, headsets, etc?
If so, what was the make and model?

Regarding your list of potential "low-level problems":
-It's completely possible that I have broken hardware. Most of my hardware is around 6 years old, so that could have something to do with it, I guess.
-I'm not overclocking.
-I haven't installed any new hardware, so there should be no new compatibility issues.
-I don't know anything about drivers except that I should try to keep them updated.
-I don't believe I'm infected with any malware. I suppose I could always be wrong.

As for the hardware diagnostics, I'm a little lost with your link. Could you perhaps be more specific as to what I should do, please?

I re-installed the ATI drivers with Catalyst Install Manager and all that. Should I now go back to your first response and follow the instructions in the "ATI video cards - DRIVER ONLY installation procedure" link?

The only gaming peripheral I own is an old Ideazon ZBoard. Nothing by SteelSeries, so I'm still curious as to why that SteelSeries driver would be there.

And I followed your instructions concerning the Realtek driver, so that should be taken care of.

Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure (read the details at the link) - Test ALL of the hard drives.

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Free Online AntiMalware Resources (read the details at the link)
There are also free, bootable antivirus disks at this link: Free Online AntiMalware Resources - Bootable Disks

If all of those pass, then you'll move on to those tests at Additional Hardware Diagnostics

If the BSOD's continue, please zip up and upload the memory dumps (they're located in C:\Windows\Minidump)

I've been trying to run the Memtest+ test, and my computer will always power down before the test is complete. No errors show, but the computer just shuts down without notice.

Check for overheating...

Wait for the system to shut down
Unplug it from the wall and open the case.
Hold onto the metal of the case with one hand (to prevent static discharge)
DO NOT TOUCH anything inside the case.
Rather you should feel around near the different items (motherboard, memory, CPU, etc) and see if anything is very hot. What you're looking for is something that's almost hot enough (or is hot enough) to burn you. Simply being very warm isn't a concern to us.
Again I say - DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING!!! I have gotten 2nd degree burns when doing this - and I'm fairly experienced at this.
BE CAREFUL!!!

I did as you instructed, and no component is that hot. The only thing that really seems warm at all is the heatsink/fan, which I imagine is how it should be.

Hmmm, I wonder what's causing it.
Try running MemTest with only one stick and try it in each slot.
Then try the other stick(s) individually in each slot.

Another option - if you get into Windows, run Prime95 to see what happens (you can download it using the instructions here: Additional Hardware Diagnostics )

Each RAM chip individually has passed Memtest twice when in DIMM 1, with no unexpected shutdowns like when they're together. I suppose that means DIMM 2 might be the problem? I'll test it now.

And I can't really get into Windows too reliably. Since we began this process, the BSODs have become much more frequent, to the point of only getting a couple of minutes of operation out of the OS, and that's if it even loads at all.

DIMM 2 also passed. Those were the only two slots I was using. Should I continue testing every DIMM, test my chips together again, or move on to other diagnostics?

Alright, after replacing my RAM chips, Memtest actually finished with them both installed, still with no errors.
I also ran the extended test on the Western Digital HDD Diagnostic program. No errors.
Malware scans aren't returning any infections.

Apparently removing and replacing the RAM did something helpful, as my computer has been up and running without a BSOD for about a half an hour now, which is a significant improvement over earlier today.

Now that I have Windows up again, I would run the Prime95 program you suggested, but I don't know how to monitor my CPU temperatures, as is instructed in the link you sent me.

EDIT: Never mind; just blue-screened again after about 90 minutes of uptime. Same error.
I've uploaded the minidumps made since I began this thread.

OK, a couple of things here

1) I suspect that there's a problem with your motherboard (or the BIOS). The problem (for me) is that hardware problems usually show themselves as different memory dumps and causes. Having all these STOP 0x133's says to me that it's a consistent problem - rather than the random one that hardware causes. So that tends to make me suspicious of the BIOS rather than the mobo itself - but that's of no matter if there isn't a recently updated BIOS available.

The other suspect is your video. I can't recall, have you replaced your video drivers during all of this? Have you checked your video card's cooling? Have you tried another video card?

2) Please go to C:\Windows, locate the MEMORY.dmp file, zip it up and upload it to a free file-hosting service. Then post a link to it here.

3) This is to get started on the difficult stuff that I mentioned in my first/second post
Press Win and X
Click on Computer Management (press G)
Expand the System Tools...Performance...Data Collector Sets...Event Trace Sessions
Ensure that "Circular Kernel Context Logger"is running

I'm hoping that this will give us some additional info that's not usually available.
Also, with this info - if I can't figure it out, I'll ask others who are more familiar with the details of debugging and WMI tracing.

4) Another option is to install Win7 and see if that stops the problems. If it does, then I'd strongly suspect your BIOS and would be fairly certain that this is a compatibility issue with your BIOS. (which means that you'd need a new mobo in order to run Win8).

5) I see that you have Core Temp installed on your system. Can you use that to monitor your CPU temps when running Prime95?
If not, here's 2 other suggested tools:
I suggest using a temperature monitoring program. I picked this free one because it was the first one I found that also shows GPU temps: CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

1) Yeah, the mobo is a little old, so, as mentioned before, the MSI hasn't provided any BIOS updates since 2010.
Also, I have replaced my video card drivers...I think. It at least installed some AMD program (not Overdrive, as I recall you telling me that it was a no-no). I'll try that again.
How would I go about checking my card's cooling?
I don't have another video card.

4) I'm not completely opposed to wiping my hard drive and installing Win7, but I'll need some time to back up a few more things. It's just inconvenient (though I realize that convenience is already very far gone at this point).

5) Yeah, I installed Core Temp after posting that I had no way of monitoring my CPU temperature. I was just hoping that Core Temp was wrong, as it was telling me that my CPU temp was about 90 degrees Celsius when simply idling. Seeing as how your instructions on how to use Prime95 said to not let temps exceed 85 degrees Celsius, I figured that was problematic.
While typing this post, Core Temp is telling me 71 degrees Celsius.

Trying to follow the instructions for installing the ATI drivers only, I, of course, was instructed to uninstall all ATI software on my computer. However, even after telling the install manager to remove all ATI/AMD software I'm still left with the folder pictured below. Is that normal?View attachment 15078

You MUST fix the CPU temps before proceeding!
The CPU temp shouldn't exceed the mid 50ºC mark (although I wouldn't get excited until it hits 60ºC).
Excessively high temps can damage the CPU permanently!

I suggest:
- reseating the cooler on your CPU with new thermal compound
- ensuring that the cooler is clean and free of dust/hairballs
- that the cooler fan is working
- that there is adequate room to ensure that the cooler gets good airflow.

Alright, after taking a good look at my heatsink, I realized that it appeared pretty ridiculously clogged with dust (I'm embarrassed by my apparent negligence :eek:). I cleared most all of it out and relocated the case to a more open area. Now temps seem to be settling around 37-40ºC.

I suppose I'll now continue on with the re-installation of my ATI drivers, following the link you posted.
But to re-ask a question I posed earlier, should I still have that AMD folder on my C: drive? I told the AMD Catalyst Install Manager to remove all AMD software, so I'm a bit confused as to whether or not that should be there. I feel like they shouldn't because when I check the Driver File Details on my video card in Device Manager, it brings up a large list of drivers files that have either "ati" or "amd" in the name.

There are ATI/AMD drivers built into the Windows system - so you may always have traces of them leftover.
Also, the AMD/ATI installer/uninstaller doesn't necessarily remove everything when it uninstalls the AMD/ATI stuff.
Don't worry about what's left over tho.

Just FYI - my system died this morning, so I won't be able to do multiple memory dumps or the advanced troubleshooting until I get a system back up.
