Windows 8 randomly restarts... BSOD

Hey,

I have had this problem for a while now but it is starting to get really annoying, I have a custom built computer with a i7 2600K, GTX 460 2Win (SLI on one card), 16GB 1600Mhz RAM, 1TB WD HD, 1250W OCZ PSU and an asus IV-Gene Z Mobo. I am running the RTM windows 8 build 9200.

Cheers,

ZT

BSOD's started suddenly around 27 December. Any idea what you were doing then?

Please check Windows Updates for ALL available updates.

I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win7/Win8 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7(and I suspect with Win8) - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win7/Win8 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

HotSpotShield is a known cause of BSOD's on some Windows sytems. Please uninstall it while we're troubleshooting. Once the system has stabilized feel free to install the latest, Win8 compatible version.

Original install date is September 3 - is this upgrade from one of the Preview builds? If so, what procedure did you use to upgrade?
I screen all Windows drivers out of my dump analysis automatically - so I won't necessarily see if there are any issues with Windows drivers.

C: drive only has about 4% free space, Z: drive only has less than 2% free space.
Windows needs 15% free space to function properly (this is an approximate figure) - so please free up 15% space on all your hard drives to ensure that there are no performance issues.

The stack text of all the memory dumps shows nVidia video drivers. Please remove the old one's and then install a fresh copy of the latest, Win8 compatible drivers from World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies | NVIDIA

Memory dumps show BIOS date of 2011, systeminfo.txt and MSINFO32 show 2012. Did you recently update your BIOS?

If the BSOD's don't stop, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Remove the LogMeIn remote program - it's drivers date from 2007/8

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Hay man thanks so much, I uninstalled the Hotspot Shield and LogMeIn and also the nVidia Driver, all of which were installed on the 27/12 when the BSOD's started. Just after that my computer went into hyper restarting and I didn't know what was happening. But I had remembered that on the 27th I took my computer downstairs to get a wireless connection. I unplugged the dlink USB WiFi adapter and that seemed to stop the BSOD :). I then discovered that it seems fine to plug the adapter in after startup to prevent BSOD's. I would update the driver to remove that inconvenience but it turns out that the adapter is long dated and it has stopped the updates.

Once again thank's a lot for your time and help :)

I'm glad that you discovered it!
Please consider that an installable wireless card (installed on your mobo) is more robust, faster, has a longer range and is generally more error free than the USB device.

That sounds like a good idea but the internet connection is temporary the walls are too thick for the wireless to penetrate to the second or third floor but I was thinking of getting powerline instead. I have heard good reviews and the speeds and the reliability and ping times are much more suited for gaming, which is the main purpose of my computer. So I may just go with powerline instead of getting a new wireless card.

Just wondering though would the powerline be compatible with windows 8? I am pretty sure it is because it is the chipset drivers that has the ethernet adapter drivers and the powerline is external, I wouldn't have thought you would need any drivers for it, but I just don't want to spend a couple hundred dollars and then find it isn't compatible.

Cheers

I have no idea about powerline stuff. I'd suggest reading up on the reviews and talking to folks that already have it.
Good luck!
