Solved Random BSOD when watching videos

This has been happening for a while now. But I've been having some unexplained BSODs. Usually it happens when playing videos. I get this "BRRRRR" noise and the computer slows down for a few seconds. And sometimes it just crashes after that, and I get a BSOD with some DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION error.

Your BIOS dates from 2009. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

You have 3 hard drives - what is the make/model/wattage and age of your power supply?

You must update your Asus ATK0110 ACPI Utility driver to the latest available version (the latest is 2009). The 2005 version (which you have) is known to cause BSOD's. Since this is an older motherboard, you may not be able to locate this - and that will mean that the system won't handle Win8. Post at the Asus forums for additional help with this driver.

Please remove your wireless XBox controller and it's software. It is not compatible with Win8 and is known to cause BSOD's.

Primary blame in the memory dumps seems to be your storage controller drivers. Please update you nForce chipset drivers to the latest, Win8 compatible version. Updating this will also update the network controller that's mentioned below.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Thank you very much for the help.
My BIOs were already updated to the latest, unfortunately the last update was in 2009.
My PSU is an I-Chia ATX-550 with 550w from about 2007-2008, it's quite old. And I do have 3 hard drives, though one is a 3.5" external and isn't receiving power from the computer.
Unfortunately I couldn't find an update to , and Asus PCProbe and AISuite Utilities won't install on my pc due to not being compatible.
I removed the xbox utility and updated nVidia nForce network driver to the latest version, though the latest version was for windows 7.
So far it seems to be ok, but as I said, the problems happen randomly. If it keeps happening, I'll just install windows 7 again and go back to windows 8 when I get a chance to upgrade my PC.

Hmm, the "BRRR" sound persists. So it's safe to assume it'll go down again in the near future. Seems even updating my drivers didn't do much.

Yup. It happened again, and this time my computer even hanged on boot.
I got lucky and actually managed to get it to work.

I have seen a lot of BIOS issues with Win8 recently. Dunno what to do about it quite yet, but it suggests to me that there may be problems due to the age of the system (so the "fix" may end up being to get a new system - but I am not recommending that just now).

I have attached another version of the ASACPI.sys driver and it's installer, please try that.
If it doesn't run (double click on the AsAcpiIns.exe file), then try running it in Compatibility mode for Win7. No guarantees that this'll work - but it's worth a try.
As with any unknown download, please save it to your computer, then extract it (DO NOT execute it) and scan it with an antivirus to be sure it's not a virus. My wife got caught by a virus in a FedEx attachment that she scanned before opening.
Please let us know if it works or not (check in C:\Windows\System32\drivers to see the date of the newly installed driver - it should be 2009, not 2005).

I would also suggest that you go into Device Manager and roll back your drivers for these 2 drivers (right click on the device, select Properties, then select the Drivers tab. Check Driver details to make sure it's the right drivers, then select the Rollback button to roll them back):
nvmf6264.sys - should be associated with your wired Network adapter
nvstor.sys - should be associated with your storage controller(s)
The reason for this is that you had 2011 versions installed - and the "update" to the Win7 version has give you 2010 versions instead.

I suspect that it's the ASACPI.sys that's the problem here - and that the nvstor.sys errors are just a result of the ASACPI.sys problems. Updating the ASACPI.sys driver should help us see if it is or not.

Ok, the new ASACPI.sys is now updated to the 2009 version. And I was able to roll back both the drivers detailed.

And then the fingers immediately uncross when the "BRRR" sound surges up again. It's only a matter of time till it goes up in flames again.
It seems the problem has become more and more frequent since I first installed it back in November. Back then, the sound still happened, but in less frequency, and it never outright crashed my pc. But ever since early January, it's been giving me these problems. I've had to resort to the refresh utility quite a few times.

Well, it's not the ASACPI.sys driver that's to blame. But it's still blaming storage drivers.
Event Viewer is full of I/O retries on Disk 2 - which may mean that you have a failing hard drive.

I did a extended scan with the western digital data life guard diagnostics, and it accused bad sectors in my drive 2. Furthermore, it failed to be able to repair those errors.
So, it's the hard drive then. That's annoying, just the other week, I had to replace an external due to bad sectors, and now my internal is acting up. Just my luck.

Sorry to hear that! Did you have a power surge recently? or a blackout? Damage from those things can be awfully difficult to iron out. I wish you luck in getting it fixed!

Well, not black outs per say, but the power does go out on an almost weekly basis around here. I should probably invest in a UPS in the near future.
I'm going to go ahead and mark this problem as solved then.

I had 2 surge protectors on the computers at my wife's office a couple of years back.

There was a power surge and the current blew the first surge protector just before the power went out.
Then they turned the power back on and it surged again - destroying the 2nd surge protector.
Luckily it stopped then, because the next one would've gotten the modem, router, wireless access point and the main office computer (the others were off because of the power problems).
