DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION and BAD_POOL_CALLER BSOD

Hi,

I recently installed Win 8 Pro on a machine that had previously had no problems running Windows 7. However, I'm now getting DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION and BAD_POOL_CALLER BSODs. I've attached the crash dumps and would greatly appreciate any help in resolving the problems.

Sorry for the delay in responding. There just aren't that many people who do BSOD analysis, so at times we get a bit overwhelmed!

Your BIOS dates from 2009. Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any BIOS updates available for your system. Also check the readme file to see if they apply to the problems that you are having. Please be advised that flashing the BIOS is a very unforgiving process - and one mistake can physically damage your motherboard.

FWIW - I've seen a lot of issues with the Asus P5 series of boards. I usually recommend this:
- DO NOT use the AUTO setting for memory. Go to the RAM manufacturer's website and get the recommended settings for the RAM. Then set those settings manually in the BIOS
- one person with a 2009 BIOS has experienced success by updating the BIOS. This is dangerous and one simple mistake can easily damage your motherboard so it won't work. Be VERY, VERY CAREFUL!!!

As of late June 2012 - I haven't seen many issues with these boards over the last several months.

Please update the Asus ATK0110 ACPI Utility driver for your system. Your's is from 2005 and is known to cause BSOD's in some Win7 systems. Unfortunately, there aren't any Win7/8 drivers available for your mobo - so you may have to try installing the Vista version in compatibility mode (or maybe trying other versions of the P5 board to see if any of them will work).

Some of the BSOD's blame NetgearUDSMBus.sys - which appears to be a wireless USB networking device. But the reports don't list a wireless USB networking device. Have you recently removed/un-installed one? There is a Netgear USB thing in the Start Menu. If it's still installed, please remove it and it's drivers. Here's my rant about these devices:

I do not recommend using wireless USB network devices. Especially in Win7/Win8 systems.
These wireless USB devices have many issues with Win7(and I suspect with Win8) - using Vista drivers with them is almost sure to cause a BSOD.
Should you want to keep using these devices, be sure to have Win7/Win8 drivers - DO NOT use Vista drivers!!!
An installable wireless PCI/PCIe card that's plugged into your motherboard is much more robust, reliable, and powerful.

We've seen a number of BSOD issues with SSD's. Here's the information that I've compiled so far:

There's not a whole bunch available to test SSD's. The "easiest" test is to remove the SSD, install a platter-based hard drive, install Windows and test for stability that way.

Here's some suggestions:
- Update the SSD's firmware to the latest available version (VERY IMPORTANT!!!)
- Update the motherboard controllers drivers to the latest available version from the controller manufacturer (NOT the mobo manufacturer unless you can't find any on the controller manufacturer's website)
- Slow the memory (RAM) down to the next slower speed (I've only seen one person who claimed that this worked for them).
- Use any manufacturer's utilities that you may have. If you don't have any, then try this free one (I haven't used it myself): Crystal Dew World
- Update chipset and storage controller drivers to the latest available from the manufacturer of the device (not the manufacturer of the motherboard). Be sure to update ALL controllers on the motherboard!
....NOTE: Recently (Nov 2011) we had BSOD issues with the Marvell 91xx controller and an SSD. You may have to switch controllers also.
- Replace the SSD with a platter based hard drive and see if that stops the BSOD's. If it does, then it's likely that there's a problem with the SSD OR an incompatibility with your system.
It's my opinion that SSD's aren't reliable enough (with current hardware) to be used on a system that needs to work reliably. Until I see reliability I will not recommend, nor will I use, SSD's for critical applications.

29 May 2012 - The frequency of BSOD's with SSD's seems to have been decreasing over the last several months. It may be approaching time to re-evaluate my stand on their suitability for use in production systems.
10 Nov 2012 - I'm seeing an upswing in SSD errors - but most appear due to older storage controller drivers. I strongly suggest NOT using storage controller drivers that don't date from 2012 (if none are available, don't connect an SSD to that controller)

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Hi,

Despite the bios update being 2009 that is the most up to date for my mb.

I've uninstalled the Netgear USB networking software.

I've been to the Asus and nVidia websites and downloaded the latest software for my components. However after installing the downloads some of the drivers appear to still be the same version, so I'm not sure what else to do about updating those drivers.

I've updated the SSD's firmware.

Now I guess I'll just have to wait and see what happens. If it keeps happening maybe that will be the excuse I need to upgrade my system.

You've done good - now we wait to see if the BSOD's stop.

Even if the drivers appear to be the same version, installing another copy can sometimes fix a corruption in the currently installed driver.

If the BSOD's don't stop, please post back with the most recent memory dumps (located in C:\Windows\Minidump)

DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION on waking from sleep

I'm afraid that the problem hasn't been fixed as tonight I had a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION on waking from sleep. I've attached the latest dump file. If you get time to look at it, that would be greatly appreciated.

The ASACPI.sys driver must be updated.
I have attached a copy of the installation stuff to this post.
Please execute (double click on) the AsAcpiIns.exe file
Then check in C:\Windows\System32\drivers to check the date of the ASACPI.sys driver

If this doesn't work, then it may be that your system is not compatible with Win8. Good luck!

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Hi John,

Unfortunately the installer you supplied didn't update the ASACPI.sys driver. When I ran it a dos box popped up and then disappeared and the file version remained the same.

As for the other drivers:
PxHlpa64.sys has updated to a March 2010 date stamp.
nvmf6264.sys is now June 2012.
nvstor64.sys stubbornly remains the same version.
AsIO.sys has been uninstalled.
libusb0.sys is now May 2011.

Unfortunately my PC still sometimes crashes on waking from sleep. Maybe something about my setup just isn't compatible with Win 8.

I'd suggest posting over on the Asus forums to see if anyone can help with the ASACPI.sys driver and the nVidia storage drivers in relation to compatibility with Win8. Otherwise I'd have to suspect that the system just isn't able to work with Win8 and you may have to either downgrade or purchase a new, Win8 compatible mobo.

Hi John,

I'll give that a go but I suspect it's time for a new PC (I actually quite like Win 8 so don't want to downgrade).

I hated Win8 after trying the Developer's Preview and the Consumer Preview.
But come June of last year I decided that I had to upgrade in order to be prepared for helping folks with their Win8 systems.

I installed the Release Preview then and muddled my way through.
As I used it I came to like it more and more. Now I like it so much that any thoughts of going back to Win7 are gone from my head.

It's a good OS and it has some nice points that recommend it over Win7.
And, with the Live Tiles thing, it's poised to change how most people do computing.
Also, we're seeing more and more changes around that web that are centered around using touchscreen technology (see all the big squares and rectangles on webpages now - makes it easier to touch!).
