Recently I made the mistake of thinking I could update my Windows XP HP Compaq dc7600 Small Form Factor to Windows 8 Pro because the package said I could but it left out the particulars. So the first install went off without a hitch. The OS got all the necessary drivers it needed from the Internet except an updated sound driver from Realtek – other than that everything worked perfectly. I was very happy.

Once I got in and looked at it I realized it was a “cluster-****” of cosmetic bullshit. I was not happy – somewhere along the line the programmers employed by Microsoft forgot that they were suppose to streamline the OS not bloat it with useless crap. Just how is this current OS suppose to be new? I am pretty sure I saw Notepad, Wordpad, and Paint, haven't they been in the OS since Windows 3.0 back in 1994?

The first thing I did was go out and get as many free apps as I could install on my computer and then I went through each one to see what they did and if they had merit – I suppose I am not a social creature because a lot of the apps were just ridiculous, useless waste of my time. I thought to myself “Just what the hell were they thinking over at Microsoft?”

Before I could do anything else, my computer crash with the new blue screen of death and the error was this: Pfn_list_corrupt – what the hell is that? I went online to find a solution and no one really knew how to fix this. So I sat it aside and went back to looking at the apps – as we know generally when your computer crashes out of the blue, generally we suspect the last software we installed as the culprit, take it out and re-boot the OS to see what effect appears when the desktop reappears. In this case nothing.

So I went back to looking at the apps. I found I liked some of the news media, music and video apps from the description I read I thought they might provide some use until I opened them up and realized how pathetic basic they were and for every app on the Start Screen there is a better Freeware version available on the Internet and any of those news media site are more accessible through your browser than the Start Page.

The reason for this is that the media and video sites require access to your Internet. Doesn't sound like much now but later on it makes a difference. So I started uninstalling the apps that I thought were useless and the computer crashes and the error is:memory_management. What the hell is that? I got 4gbs of RAM, how can there be a problem? I have to wait for the system to reboot and send the report to Microsoft. Now I don't know what to do except go back to the Internet and find a solution that doesn't seem to exist – I am really starting to hate this OS and thinking of driving over to Redmond and strangling the first Microsoft employee I see.

Only this time a new problem shows up, every time I right-click in Windows Explorer the computer crashes to the desktop and if that wasn't bad enough when I tried to go online to find a solution for this the top of my browser disappeared into the top of the monitor and I couldn't get access to any controls – damn I was pissed. You know its only about 40 miles from my house to the Microsoft Campus. I am considering it.

Re-boot and sure enough I still have the problem – now what do I do? It is a good thing my computer can't record the things I say to it. I uninstalled the Firefox browser and re-installed with no change, and that only left me with one option: cut to the chase and reinstall the OS. Now while I was out looking for a solution to my newest problem, I came across an article explaining how to use Verifier.exe to see which of my drivers were causing the problem. I set the manager as the article explained and it had no effect on my computer. So I was thinking that perhaps my software was causing a conflict. I started uninstalling my software and in the middle of an uninstall the computer crashes and the error message says: Pfn_list_corrupt – again. Computer Rage.

Having dealt with many different types of computers and Microsoft OS. My first computer was an Epson 8088 with a Hercules monitor with 4megs of RAM using DOS 5. I should be able to figure this out. I have never let those little munchkins at Microsoft beat me before and I have no intention of letting happen now.

One of things I am really good at is ripping systems apart and make them do things that the creator hadn't intended. Basically my job is to solve technological headaches, which is no an easy thing. I had this professor in college who told me that if I wanted to be successful in this business make sure I could do things other people couldn't.

So I re-install the operating system and every thing seems to be working properly, with the exception to the sound driver which I have to add. So I go back and look at my software and I started to re-install drivers first with Adobe, Cyberlink, DivX, FLV Flash Player, Google Earth, Internet Download Manager, K-Lite Video Codec, Logitech Setpoint, Silverlight, Visual C++ 2008 Runtime, NFO Viewer, Sun Java 9, USB 3.0 PC Card Adapter, WinRAR 4. Reboot the system and every thing seems fine. The next thing I installed was the Firefox browser, Canon Printer drivers, Free Rip Pro, Paint Shop Pro, Note Pad Plus 6, Thumbs Plus 9, Ulead Photo Explorer 8, XMPlayer3.6. Reboot the system and not even a hiccup.

Now I don't know what to do, maybe, whatever was wrong had fixed its self, it's possible, it is after all a Microsoft Operating System. Then I installed Nero 8 so I could burn some DVDs. The computer worked fabulously on the first disk and it was faster than the Cyberlink Power ToGo on the XP system. It burned 5 discs before the computer crashed in the middle of burning a disc and the error message was: Pfn_list_corrupt – what in the hell is going on?

The computer reboots and I send the report to Microsoft and I tried the burning software again and it burns the disc with out a hitch and I am just amazed. I put a another disc in and halfway through the burning process the computer crashes again – same error message. I actually had to go outside and walk around the building twice I was so pissed. When I get back I decide to quit burning discs and do something else – watch a movie. I looked the video offerings that came as applets and really found them wanting and the movie was in MP4 format so I went and got RealPlayer and a quarter way into the movie the computer crashes, by this point I am simply beside myself with anger I can't do anything with. It is frustrating.

Reboot the computer and send the error message to Microsoft. Let's do something else. Let's play a game. I installed Dawn of War SoulStorm. Reboot the system and everything looks like it should. A hour and a half into the game and the computer crashes with the error message: page_fault_in_non_page_area – what?

“**** it.” Reboot from the install disc and reinstall the operating system – God I am really getting tired of this. I can't quit, I can change my tactics, but I can't quit. I know there is a solution, it is after all a Microsoft Operating System. I didn't waste time going to the Internet looking for that error, I just didn't see the point.

So the OS is reinstalled and I make it back to the desktop and as I am installing the sound card drivers and the computer crashes with this error message: Pfn_list_corrupt and yes by now I am screaming at the computer and figuring out every way possible to kill Paul Allen – painfully. I am really getting to hate Microsoft but...

My experience tells me that because the computer crashed when installing the sound card driver that the problem with the computer is a hardware issue – software has nothing to do with it. So how do you fix that? By going up to the HP site and have HP detect the type of computer I have and recommend the correct drivers for the Windows 8 Pro Operating System.

Before it could do that it needed to install an applet on to my computer – fine with me but not with Windows 8 – I needed to download and install Net Framework 2.0 and 3.0 – fine, I did that and HP installed the applet which when completed only told me what I already knew. This particular model only shipped with XP and Vista operating systems – no Win 7 or Win 8 drivers. Great – another damn dead end.

Great, I got three choice now:

  • Take the computer to a tech and see if the hard drive can be wiped so I can reinstall XP with SP3. $?
  • Replace the hard drive. $60
  • Simply get an updated surplus computer with Vista installed on it and then use the upgrade disc. $200

Ever have one of those time where if you go to sleep and let your brain play with the information, when you wake up you generally have a solution, that ever happen to you? It happens to me frequently.

Here is the solution to these error messages:

pfn_list_corrupt
memory_management
page_fault_in_non_page_area

Net Framework 1.1 and Net Framework 1.1 sp1

It dawned on me that when HP wanted to talk to my computer it needed backwards compatibility and it received that by installing Net Framework 2.0 and 3.0. The computer has been up for two days without a crash. However, while writing this the computer just crashed with the error message: pfn_list_corrupt so I am not as smart as I thought I was in this instance.

Perhaps someone up there know something I don't that I could use?

It should be noted that I didn't upgrade one computer but two computers. The other is my is my Compaq Notebook from Vista Basic to Windows 8 Pro and it has never had any problems – so I am thinking that this is still a hardware problem. So the question is what is “pfn_list” and can I delete it? It seems to be the root of the problem.

These are the files I am sending to Microsoft, you want them too I suppose?

Well i tried to use your attachment manager and I couldn't get a response from your servers, these are the files I'm trying to send:

122812-27328-01.dmp and MEMORY.DMP it is about 65mg rar together.

The hard drive can be wiped and Win XP can be reinstalled - but you have to have the reinstallation disks and product key.
Don't replace the hard drive until you test it. Free diagnostics here: Hard Drive Diagnostic Procedure

Win8 runs on an amazing number of systems that I wouldn't even try to run Vista or Win7 on. Sometimes it's a PITA, and sometimes it's impossible - but most cases can be dealt with in one fashion or the other.

Your BIOS dates from 2009. Check to see if there are updates available. Please be advised that making a mistake during a BIOS flash can damage your motherboard. Be very, very careful!

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :
