Solved Right click on local disk produces crash

Hello there, unfortunately, I am posting about a weird error, which I have no idea how to solve. I tried to search for solutions as well, no luck. Here is what I wanted to do: right click in File Explorer on a local disk, so I can share it, so I can access that drive from my laptop. Attached a picture, I want to share "Local Disk (E:)", underlined with red, with my mad paint skills. You can see a snippet from my task bar as well, it is important.

Here is the problem: after right clicking, the OS seems to think about 1-2 seconds, then it closes the File Explorer, then kills my task bar, every icon disappears for a few seconds, then everything loads back, tho File Explorer won't open again automatically. Back in Windows7 and XP etc. days this was typically something like an "explorer.exe" crash. Attached another picture, so you get an idea how my taskbar looks exactly, at the moment of restarting. Note: the taskbar flashes before reappearing - still without icons - with dark blue color for a brief moment, then it loads my icons, as I mentioned above. Dark blue is the color of my "Start screen", or however it is officialy called, not sure. The pic:

Also, you can see at the right side, the clock does not show as well.

My setup is like this: I have a 500GB hard drive: C: is the system partition, D: is the data partition. E: is a completely separate 320GB hard drive, another data partition. I have a fully legal Windows 8 Professional, with updates installed(perfectly up to date, I just did an update check, everything is installed) provided by MSDNAA (or Dreamspark nowadays, if I am right) for university students. Every hardware works good, so something went wrong with Windows 8. I am not completly sure, but I think I could right click the drives a while ago, it started just now. Also, I can right click everything else without error, just not the disks. I don't want to roll back to Windows7, since I really like 8, but if this won't get sorted out, I may have to.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

EDIT: solved... whoever has any problem something like this, here is what I did:
It was obvious that something 3rd party context menu extension(shell extension) caused the problem. I did try to disable extensions 1 by 1, to see if it solves it. Finally, disabling "NVIDIA CPL Context Menu Extension" solved my problem. Now it got me wonder: why the f*** they needed to add this without my permission, and what it does... but that's another topic.

cheers

Hundeva,

It took me a while to figure this out but indeed, the NVIDIA CPL Context Menu Extension is the culprit that crashes Explorer in Windows 8 when right-clicking on a drive or Flash Drive. Using ShellExView was pivotal. :D

Forgot to mention that Explorer in Windows 8 still has problems with the NVIDIA driver.

Explorer becomes unstable when going from a surround resolution (5790 x 1290) to three individual resolutions on my three monitors. BTW the monitors are exactly the same. The taskbar flickers and you cannot right-click nor navigate. To get out of this unstable state Explorer has to be restarted through Task Manager.

Has anyone encounter that problem? Hopefully a new driver version will fix this.

I don't know if this thread helped you or not, but nice one on catching that damn extension. :)

You bet it helped me! I gave you a thumbs up for your post. Thanks ! :thumb:

I have been having this issue for on and off for months. It has been most obvious when using a Kingston DT Rubber 16.0 GB USB 3.0 flash drive. Every time I right-clicked on it, BSOD!

Finally solved!

Glad to help you then. :)

About the another issue: I "only" have 2 monitors, both on 1280×1024, using them in the old fashioned "Extend" mode, which - as expected - works perfectly. The only thing I can think of is, try older or newer (maybe even BETA) nvidia drivers, maybe it will help.

I installed the new NVIDIA driver 2 days ago 320.18. I just posted on the EVGA forums and waiting for a reply.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I'm having this same problem in 8.1. I downloaded this ShellExView app pointed out above and tried disabling the nVidia one mentioned. No change so I wonder if A. Did you have to reboot after disabling it? And B. A number of the items listed in it (over a hundred) are pink. Any idea what that means? Oh Wait I see the pink ones are all marked "No" under the Microsoft column. I guess that means Microsoft signed off on the Yes ones?

Tbh, I don't remember if I had to reboot, but probably not. If disabling the nVidia thingie didn't solve the issue, try to remember if you installed anything new, just before the crashes started to happenning. If there is nothing you can remember, try to disable the extensions one by one, and test again after every disabling. It may take a long time, but I think this is the way to go.

Ah great, I started going through them one by one and found the problem one almost right away. It was called "Autodesk Inventor Part". I disabled it then I realized I don't even like Inventor so I just uninstalled it. lol

I know this is the Windows 8 forums, but I would like to say thanks from a 7 user, I was having similar problems and this fix worked for me as well.

I know this is an old topic, but from the so many results in google, this is the only one that provides a good solution.
So thank you, and I hope it will help more people.

Just wanted to thank you guys and hopefully this will make this thread easier to find for some; disabling the nVidia extension in the ShellExView worked immediately for me.
