Solved BSOD Kernel Data Inpage Error

Hello,
I have a Gateway GT5408, purchased in 2007 that came with Vista. Last week my system failed to boot and I kept getting the black repair screen on an endless loop. So I replaced what I thought was a faulty hard drive and installed Windows 8. I’m now getting a BSOD that reads Kernel Data Inpage Error. So now it’s obvious to me that it was not just a faulty hard drive, but something else. Guess I should have been paying more attention and tried to investigate that issue first… anyway, I’m here now.

The BSOD seems to only happen when powering on or waking up the hard drive. When I set the hard drive shut down to never and then put the system to sleep, I do not get the BSOD on wake up, but still get errors and registry leaks.

I have followed all instructions I can find here on how to get a minidump file, but I just can’t get it to create one.

There are also some other errors and warnings listed that happen on almost every start up and wake from sleep.

Most of this is now way over my head so any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Stacey

Thank you for your reply.

I have followed the instructions here on how to create the dump file, but I still cannot get it to create one.

MS Money crashes when importing a QIF or OFX file and when trying to add new payee. Microsoft update kb2756872 is rumored to have fixed this, but I've not been that lucky. I have been trying different settings and other fixes, so yes I’m crashing it each time. My next step is actually a reinstall, but I've already done that once too with no luck.

Volume L is no longer attached to this system. This is my old hard drive that I replaced. The date of this event is when I had both the old and new drive running to see what I could pull off the old drive. Currently only the new hard drive is installed. I did run the chkdsk on C and attached another file.
After running chkdsk I am still getting the Kernel Data Inpage Error BSOD along with those pesky other errors and warnings.

Thanks so much for your help.
Stacey

Can you fill in your system specs?
You can use this app to find them: Speccy Free System information Utility
Then enter them in the 'My System Specs' drop box at the lower left of any of your posts.

Are these the settings you checked?

1. a)At the Start screen type 'Advanced System Settings'
b)Or go to Control Panel, click on 'System' then 'Advanced System Settings'

2. In 'Startup and Recovery' click 'Settings'

3. Under 'System failure'
• Check the 'Write an event to the system log' box
• Un-check the 'Automatically restart' box
• Select 'Small memory dump (256 kb)'
• In the 'Small dump directory box , it should be '%SystemRoot%\Minidump'
• Check the 'Overwrite any existing file' box

It will be easier to analyze if you can get a dump file.

What is your Page File set to?
Open 'Control Panel' > 'System' > 'Advanced system settings' > under 'Performance' click 'Settings' > in the 'Advanced' tab, under 'Virtual memory' click 'Change' >
Make sure it's set to 'Automatically manage paging file size for all drives'.

Hi.

Can you fill in your system specs? Done! If you need more let me know.

Are these the settings you checked? Yes, these are the settings I have tried. I let the system crash again this morning and got the BSOD, but still no dump file.

What is your Page File set to? Checked this too, this is set as you suggested.

Run the WD Lifeguard test on you HDD. Quick Test and Extended Test. I ran this last week and again today. Passed.

Run memtest86+ for 7 full passes, with all RAM cards installed. I will run this tonight.

Thanks, Stacey

Good work on the System Specs.
Do you still have the stock PSU?
OEM PSUs are not known for their quality or longevity.
I just had to replace one in a +4 year old Dell desktop.

What is the Intel RST driver version?

Hi.
I ran memtest86+ for 10 hours, 9 passes, no errors.
I updated the PSU in 2009. LSP Ultra 550w
Power Options are set to Balanced, with the exception of the hard drive. I have set this to ‘never’ for now, because that’s what gives me the BSOD.
Need a little help finding other two things you asked for, could you give me more details on how to find them?

What is the Intel RST driver version?
Do you have EIST (SpeedStep) enabed in your BIOS?

Looking at the device manager I did find this:
Intel R ICH7R/DH SATA RAID CONTROLLER 8.6.2.1022 8/7/10
Microsoft Storage Spaces Controller 6.2.9200.16384 6/21/2006.
This same drive is listed for the hard drive that was configured on 11/23/2012. I thought I had updated this...

Thanks, Stacey

Post the full crash dump files.

For the Intel RST driver version, open Device Manager > then expand 'IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers' > right click 'Intel.....Series AHCI Controller' > Properties > Driver Tab. Get the 'Driver Version:' info.
Post a screen shot of your Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers/Properties/Driver Tab.

The balanced power setting with the hard driver set to 'Never' is ok, leave this setting the way you have it.

Can you download CPUZ and post a snip of the CPU, Mainboard, Memory, and SPD tabs.
For posting the information , enter 'Snipping tool' in the Start button > Search box, hit enter. Select the area you want to post and save to a convenient place.

For the dump files, in File Explorer, click 'View' in the top toolbar, check the 'Hidden Items' box.
Post the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions, these files will give some useful information.

OEM BIOS usually doesn't have very many adjustments.

Download and install the Intel RST driver:
Intel® Rapid Storage Technology
File name: iata_enu.exe Version: 11.2.0.1006

Download to your computer, close all programs, double click the Intel RST driver, it will install and ask for a re-boot, re-boot.
Check the Device Manager if it is installed.

When did you buy/install the 2X1GB PNY RAM?

For testing, remove the 2X512MB original RAM cards.
Run the system normally, try to recreate the crash scenario.

I installed the RST Driver, device manager still shows old version of driver, but a folder was created in program files for the RST.

I change to complete memory dump in advanced setting, but got an event error and page file was not large enough.

Complete memory dump will be a very large file, needs to be mini dump.

I'll check on the RST driver, if it didn't install then it probably isn't for your system.

Ok. So I have not had the BSOD Kernel Error since 11/30 and IRQL Not Less Or Equal once and that was two days ago. The only changes in the last 4 days were that I installed Bitdefender, reinstalled Money, ran the MEMTEST86+ and installed the RST Driver you suggested, although the RST is not showing up in Device Manager. I’ve tried everything to recreate the BSOD and for now I can’t. Guess that could be a good thing. Right? ;)

I did not take out the Ram yet, because I wanted to get the memory dump to work first. Still, no luck. No files. No folder. No dump!! Now, no crashes to report, so for now I’m leaving the old RAM in place.

I installed the PNY RAM in 2009, same time that I updated the PSU, Graphics Card and DVD R/W. I replaced the Graphics card again this year because of a whine that was driving me nuts.

So, as far as the BSOD, I’m not ready to call this solved just yet, because the minute I do it will happen again. I’d like to give it a few more days and see what happens, if that’s ok with you.

I have really appreciated your help and I still have some errors in the event log, if you have time to help me figure them out?
I think that one of them is the keyboard, it’s just not Window’s 8 compatible. No big deal.
One of them is a Wininit Warning and has something to do with NVIDIA.

There are a few others so I went ahead and ran the SF Diagnostic Tool again and attached it here.
I really like to get to the reason why I don’t have a dump file or folder. Any chance we can figure this one out too.

Thanks!!!

That's good news.
Best to wait a week, see if it is stable, then you can mark it 'Solved'.

The dump files issue is a strange one, if I come across anything else I'll post it.

According to this your page file is too small.
First, post a snip of the 'Virtual Memory' window.
Open 'Control Panel' > 'System' > 'Advanced system settings' > under 'Performance' click 'Settings' > in the 'Advanced' tab, under 'Virtual memory' click 'Change' >
Un-check 'Automatically manage paging file size for all drives'.

This is saying your graphics driver crashed, it will usually re-load, you may want to update the driver.
If these errors continue then install an older driver.

Here is the snip of the virtual memory. I Un-checked 'Automatically manage paging file size for all drives' and restarted. Should I increase this setting?

Still working on the Nvidia driver issue and I uninstalled the Apple Mobile Device, I never used it anyway.

I've had a few new errors pop up, a side by side error about my HP printer, need to update the hardware on that one. Bonjour for Apple is also giving me task schedule errors, but not a big deal there, either.

I am still getting this error "Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service 1530" at every restart and power on and I get varied number of registry leaks. I have no idea what this one is since there is not a lot of information in the event viewer.

Thanks so much for the help, I think I'm almost there with this thing.

Good news, no crashes.

For the Virtual Memory window, check 'Custom size'.
Initial size(MB):3072
Maximum size (MB):6144

The problem may be your 'Recommended' is slightly smaller than it should be, it has to be larger than your actual RAM size, which is 3072MB.

The BSOD seems to be solved, no issues with that for two weeks. I'm not sure what we did that resolved the issue exactly, but one of the steps we took here worked. :thumb:

I am still trying to fix all these other errors, but that's a different issue.

Thanks so much!!
