Windows 8 has been running fantastically until yesterday. This is what happened:

I had an update to do, so I did it, and it required a restart. The update was:
Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602 (Definition 1.139.2352.0)Installation date: ‎11/‎19/‎2012 10:09 AM
Installation status: Succeeded
Update type: Important

Also, these were likely installed as well:
Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2769165)
Installation date: ‎11/‎18/‎2012 11:28 AM
Installation status: Succeeded
Update type: Important

AND

Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2770917)
Installation date: ‎11/‎18/‎2012 11:27 AM
Installation status: Succeeded
Update type: Important

So, what happened...

The computer restarts, and I think everything is fine, but oh wait! The startup screen is blue, not red (my preference), so I knew something was wrong right away. I log in to a black desktop (I have a set of images that rotate), no metro tiles (the "start" menu is completely blank, and when I press "show all apps," nothing shows up). All my programs are installed, but when I open them, it is like they had never been installed before. Office asks for my initials/name, Dropbox asked me to log in, etc. Nothing will stay pinned to the metro tiles OR the taskbar. Every time I open Chrome, it asks me if it wants to be my default browser. Further, the test is pixelated, indicating something is wrong with my video card driver, but all the drivers think they are okay, and I do a scan, and everything seems fine. Unfortunately, this decided to delete my windows backup, though it saved my "file history" folder (a bit curious if you ask me). After one day, Windows thought something was wrong with my harddrive, it did some maintenance, but on restart, no difference.

Now, this isn't a problem that is killing me functionally, but it is a problem because everything just disappeared. Help!

you can restore the pc to it's install state, pc settings(charm bar or metro version)/general and at the bottom should be two options,
refresh pc, saves apps and stuff and reinstalls the o/s
reset pc, back to the start and drops everything.

alternativly you could just type it on the metro ui, reset pc or refresh pc...which is probably faster:)

don't know what's happened but you could try the refresh, seeing as you already lost things it may not help much apart from fix the os without the prefrences you already set.
reset would just bring you back to where you are now without the possible issues you could come across that haven't manifested yet.

Gazz,

Thanks for the advice. For whatever reason, the settings are all grayed out, and I cannot refresh pc or do any of the other settings. I am hoping not to have to reformat...

If you have any other suggestions, let me know. If you know of another way to get to the refresh pc menu, that would be helpful also. Thanks.

Hi there Capt. Jack,

I seem to agree with you. I logged off and an error flashed (something to do with my Catalyst Control Center), though I couldn't print screen it fast enough, and it did not occur after I logged out of the account again. I ran the sfc/scannow and it came up with errors logged in the CBS.log. There seems to be a LOT wrong. The file is obviously massively huge, so bare with me below:

Interesting thing happened. The refresh PC/restart PC decided that it couldn't repair my Windows 8 OR reinstall it because a partition is missing, when in fact, there is no partition missing. I will have to continue searching...

For whatever reason, making a new admin account and erasing the old one seems to have solved all the problems. I hope this solution is permanent! Thanks for your help.
