Desktop tile missing from Start screen

Hey all

I successfully got the Win8 90-day trial installed about 4 days ago, and everything's been working great. There have been no crashes or performance problems, and my hardware and software works fine.

However, today I ran into an odd problem. Somehow, the Desktop tile on my Start screen disappeared. I don't know how this happened, and I can't seem to get it back.

I have tried searching for Desktop and all that comes up is Remote Desktop Connection, and nothing else in Settings or Files. I can't find the tile anywhere.

I know there are other ways to get back to the desktop, I'd just like the tile back.

Anyone have ideas? Thanks for the help :)!

p.s. sorry if this is in the wrong section, didn't know where to put it.

I'd like to know this too. Almost all of the tiles for classic apps have disappeared from the start screen and the equivalent icons on the desktop and the applications e.g. office have dissappeared from the 'all apps' and search so there appears no way of launching them. All the applications still appear in the program list in control panel. Oddly enough I have three application for classic desktop left on the start screen.

These all disappeared when I did a scroll on the mouse in the start screen, one second thirty or so tiles, next second about a dozen left.

Normally I'd run a system restore for a problem like this but I have only just installed everything and there are no restore points, very surprising considering that there have been quite few updates from MS.

Thanks in advance, George

Right click the Start Screen and select All Apps and see if it is there. Should be listed under Apps. If it is Right Click it and Pin to Start.

Hey guys, thanks for the replies :).

Unfortunately I'm back to Windows 7 now. I thought that doing a Reset would fix the problem, and it did, but the bad news was Reset removed every program I had installed. So in that case it would have been just as much work to re-install every single program instead of just installing Win7 (the strange thing was these were common programs, web browsers, media players, even Office 2010 was removed).

I hope MS finds a solution to this problem, because I really did enjoy Win8. Right now I'm going to continue using Win7, but I plan on purchasing 8 once SP1 is released. That way they should have most of the bugs worked out.

Once again, thanks for the help, and I do look forward to buying 8 SP1 :)!

I select ?????.exe from the desktop's file manager. Then I right click & select 'Pin to Start Screen'. Next, I flip over to the Start screen. It is there as a tile and I execute it. The next time that I do a logon, the tile has disappeared.

What am I missing?
