Hey Guys,

I just installed Windows 8 RTM on my Dell Studio 1558.I have been at it for a few hours now and I must have had atleast 20 BSODs. Earlier it was the Display Driver I guess and got the latest AMD Driver( I have AMD Radeon HD 5470). Which i guess solved to a bit. But now i have very strange BSODs. Particular when i try to adjust screen brightness with the "Fn+F4/F5". Its not a coincidence. Checked 5 times. That would be very very strange i think. Also when i try to take my laptop off the power and run on battery. It crashes once again. And like 3 out 4 times it crashes when i do that.

Guys i am really interested in making my Windows 8 machine stable. Can someone please help with where do i start with. Like do i post the Event logs or something else. I am quite tech savvy and was out of windows scenario for a while.

I really appreciate any help being provided here. :)

Should i just copy paste the whole event files from C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs? Mainly "System". There are many critical events. Exactly when i got BSODs.

Dell Studio 15 (1558) with ATI Radeon HD 5470 user here as well. I am also getting BSOD constantly when the screen refreshes due to change in brightness from Fn+F4/F5, as well as when the screen dims and I move the mouse again. I have tried both ATI drivers 12.10 and the beta 12.11, but doesn't seem to make a difference with this particular issue.

For anyone other 1558 users reading this, I am able to get by for now by changing the Power Options to never dim or turn off display (both On Battery and Plugged in).

I will keep watching this thread and updating if I find any other fixes or updates that will make Windows 8 workable. My best guess though, is that we are at the mercy of AMD to make a better driver.

Ya thats terrible. Coz everytime i take my charger off, it flickers and i get a BSOD. Also, iam using driver version 8.982.10.8000. The one i got from here http://www2.ati.com/drivers/12-10_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe

There is also a beta driver at the end of the page. AMD Catalyst Have u tried using the beta driver. I havent. Just wondering if its only the display driver or something else is wrong too. May be some one helps with the help of the dumps i submitted.

Also what drivers are using for bluetooth and Accelerometer. I have got some drivers and they seem to be working. But dont know if they creating any conflict. Plus are there supposed to be updated cantiga and intel management drivers?? i am not aware of that.

Your reports point to graphics

Atikmdag.sys file description

The only suggestion that I have is to update the drivers. I cannot offer advice on what should be done if appropriate drivers are not yet available. Call the company, Call MS, email them too. If they get enough complaints they will act quickly or at least offer a work around.

I did as u said. But the issue is even though I kept the brightness to full ( couldn't adjust the slider exactly at same level on both) on both battery and power. But still it dims a bit when I take off the power and crashes every time. One stupid driver has made my laptop into desktop..

What u doing to deal with it???

I am currently using the beta driver 12.11. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to fix the issue.

i don't have Bluetooth, but am using the original Dell drivers from their website for the chipset, bios, networking, and everything else besides graphics. My BSOD is reporting the same issue, so pretty much guaranteed to be related to AMD driver.

The best course of action does seem to be to complain to AMD and Microsoft. You may want to post to Home - Microsoft Community as well

Yes I plan to report it to AMD and Microsoft as well..

Meanwhile i have found an interim solution which is to at least make our laptops usable. I have disabled the ATI adapter from the device manager. Yes the graphics arent that awesome. But its better than have BSODs every few minutes.

So i am not gonna be on Integrated Graphics till AMD doesnt figure it out.

Also, I used The consumer preview for a few days and dont remember the problem happening back then. May be M$ changed something in between.

Lets hope it gets resolved real soon.

Nope, no news. I submitted a report from the link you provided. I even tried using the generic PnP graphic driver but that did not fix the BSODs. So, I am back on Windows 7 for the foreseeable future (and also considering getting an apple laptop)

Let me know if you are able to get anything working.

Hey Guys i came across the particular thread and there people seems to have fixed the issue. The link is Windows 8 Pro Dell studio 1558 AMD hd5470 BSOD - Microsoft Community

My problem is that i am back to windows 7 and cant test it myself and so i want anyone who still has windows 8 to test it out and report if its actually working.
