Greetings,

This issue may have been asked before ....... my disc drive died on my Win7 computer and so I have bought a new notebook with SS data storage. Running Win 8.1 ........ I often right click internet addresses and put them in posts or text messages for others to use. Now (and I've only had the new computer a couple of weeks), when I'm on a page of a website, there is simply a a worded description/heading at the top of the window/page ..... no box with the internet page address in it. What am I not doing ??? Thanks.

Sounds like you are using Metro on IE8. The address bar is at the bottom of the page and should be available by swiping your cursor from the bottom/corner of the screen.

Unless you are using a touch screen, many users prefer the desktop mode. There should be a tile on the start screen for Desktop and you can set Win8 to automatically boot to desktop. There are many tutorials on using Win 8/8.1, you may want to Google for others.

I've only had Win 8 for a couple of weeks and my hatred for it is irreversible and terminal. I originally posted about not being able to see an address bar while using even the chrome browser ...... the fix suggested for IE 11 was not possible as using the charms - settings no longer provides access to IE in any way ...... another update by Microsoft no doubt. I've been using computers since windows 98 and never had any problems doing what I wanted. I actually think 98 allowed you more access to the innards than following systems. I cannot do anything with this crap. McAfey is now off ..... I didn't want it to start with and sure aren't going to subscribe to it ........ but nows the system tells me Windows Defender is down and won't let me turn it on ......... Are they trying to force me to buy the McAfee crap ? I don't put anything Microsoft's lying ways. Also, now when I click on Chrome's desktop shortcut, the screen goes black, all I can see in the tray is google's links (google plus, mail, youtube, etc) and the google apps launch screen comes up ........... I am really sick of this thing. I'm willing to erase it all and find a copy of WIN7 which was tolerable.

An update : IE 11 is now showing addresses but chrome has simultaneously gone haywire ...
When I click on my desktop shortcut for chrome (which should take me to the Google search page), the screen that appears is black, the chrome app launcher is in "open" mode and the tray has only symbols for Google services/apps (google plus, google gmail, youtube, chrome, etc). I have to click on the "chrome" symbol for the google search page to open. After a search, if I go back to the desktop, placing the browser pointer above the symbol in the tray has no effect .......... no small "screens" shown to show what screens are "open" ........ I have to click on the chrome icon ...... then I'm taken back to the black page with open app launcher, etc ....... from there, after clicking on chriome symbol in tray again, the "screens" all appear in a stacked normal matter. Don't have an idea to solve this. date ......
Before chrome started doing this, it would open to the search page from the desktop shortcut but would not show addresses ...... only the text I mentioned earlier. Now when accessing the browser in this weird way, it too is showing addresses. Should I learn to live with it. I am seriously thinking of giving Linux a try ......... I miss the "Help" section of WIN& and earlier versions which allowed one to qualify problems ......... a few basic videos on "normal" use is the only thing I see on this computer. And to hell with being forced into the cloud ......... I trust nobody and see it as forced socialism and "we big guys know what's best for you " ..........
