I am frequently getting messages that IE has stopped working. If I hit restart the program, the screen will momentarily blank, then return. Sometimes this keeps happening over and over. Is this a computer problem or a provider problem? I have a dish for my internet that I rarely have problems with.

I got so many errors with IE 11, I switched to Opera.
Just my experience.

Someone else may find a solution for you.

Thanks for the responses. I've been hunting, so haven't been on the computer much. What is Opera? I went to the link suggested anddid the updates, but windows 8 won't let you uninstall IE. I am going to try to turn it off then back on, haven't tried that yet.

With HippsieGypsie's post, you may have overlooked this part: How to reset Internet Explorer settings
It is easy to reset IE, and often if will fix the problem. If not, try a SFC scan: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/3047-sfc-scannow-command-run-windows-8-a.html

Hope this helps

Follow Sailor's advice and reset IE (Internet Options/Advanced/Reset)

Opera is an alternate browser like Google Chrome and Firefox. IE can't be uninstalled as you need for Windows Updates. Verify your Windows Updates are current. (Control Panel/System and Security/Windows Updates)

Also check the event viewer to see errors in the system. (Control Panel/System and Security/Admin Tools/View Event Logs) You probably will see many errors, but just focus on the critical ones and those pertaining to IE.

Let us know the result.

Apparently IE 11 is no longer a program but a FEATURE.

To 'uninstall' it you turn it off, to reinstall you turn it back on again.

If you swipe from the right, and search for Features you will find 'Turn Windows Features on and Off' in the results.

Thanks for posting that, SaggyMaggyPoo. :thumb:

Yes, we do learn something new every day. I never knew that was so for IE11. I haven't had to uninstall/reinstall IE since around version 8? I think that came with W7 when released, but v10 in the end. I know it's v11 in W7 now.

Wondering if MS has configured it this way to get around some local laws?

I'm thinking this only turns off the feature, not uninstalls it, therefore it remains in the system. I would imagine a reboot is needed for system reconfiguration? Also wondering if this will help the OP. Hopefully so.

I found the information on the Microsoft site. It was the way they were recommending to uninstall and reinstall IE. I don't recall there being anything about rebooting, but it would seem to make sense (and shouldn't hurt anyway??). I never actually tried it as I was able to resolve my issue in a different way.

Wording is conflicting. It is just turned off. Not sure the purpose/advantage of turning off IE as it is need to receive updates.

Reinstall Internet Explorer in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8Because Internet Explorer is now a Windows feature in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8, you can't uninstall it. However, you can turn it off. To do this, follow the steps in the "Turn off Internet Explorer" section in Install or uninstall Internet Explorer (Install or uninstall Internet Explorer - Windows Help)
.

After you turn off Internet Explorer and then restart your computer, Internet Explorer will be removed from your computer.

You can also turn the Internet Explorer Windows feature back on to reinstall it on your computer.

Additionally, you can use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files (Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files )
to validate the corresponding system files before you reinstall Internet Explorer.

So what is the difference between uninstalling IE and removing it form your computer I wonder . I've always assumed that when I uninstalled something that's exactly what I did (okay so it might still exist somewhere deep down in there, but not in any way I could access it).

When I used Microsoft forums (back in the dark days before I found this forum) there was always one guy who insisted I MUST use IE to download anything from the Microsoft site, and wouldn't accept that Firefox did the job just as well. Even when IE wasn't working for me he kept insisting I should use it. Maybe they're just trying to convince everyone that IE is necessary for updates etc. so they'll keep using it.

Yes, it seems to me access is the word. The wording is misleading in the article and probably needs to be edited for clarification. So far as I know turning off a feature removes access to that feature by removing any menu items and icons, but all files and data for the feature remain on the HD. It can therefore be turned on again.

So, instead of "Internet Explorer will be removed from your computer", it should read Internet Explorer access will be removed from your computer.
