Windows Essentials is fine on 8.1, I have it myself

Not sure if you can stop the default program from checking emails (if logged into windows with your ms id), but
run the PC Settings app from your start screen
go to Search and apps option on the left, then notifications from next screen
on here you can turn off notifications from the mail app and then ignore it

EDIT: Just been checking on mine, open the email app, then press the windows key and c to bring up the charms bar, then select settings, now select accounts and click on your email account, for the box that says download new emails, change this to manual, it will now only receive emails when you open the app

Well I have to say I did have it working but all of a sudden I lost messenger part of it, and had a hard time with Skype but got that to work now but messenger is gone I did like that little program, only way I see is to remove all then re-install all but I have added emails to the email program and really don't want to re-install

Update - Well I went to do a backup and then I try to uninstall then it gave me an option to fix things, all well now.....

Not sure on Messenger, I don't use this as I thought MS killed it off

If you do need to do a re install

Go to the following folder
c:\Users\paul\AppData\Local\Microsoft

replace the bolded bit with your user name

and copy the folder called 'Windows Live Mail' to somewhere, I usually just copy it to the desktop

Now do an uninstall of the program, then re install it

Copy the 'Windows Live Mail' folder back

Launch mail and it will be back with all your settings and emails intact, just as you left it

Update to the Update...
Well I guess I talked too soon, seems that Skype has taken over the messenger app, and since I am against Skype I will not be using that app, very disappointed though I did like the layout of the app.

Live Mail is great. But as noted above, it's last version is 2012.

I migrated my Live Mail from my Windows 7 machine but didn't use the import export. As paulsalter points out, it's easier to just copy the folders over. The import/export process just creates unnecessary sub folders.

Although you may already be past the import steps, here's a video to move stuff from an old Live Mail installation to a new one.

In case you are worried about Live Mail not being supported in the future, here's the video to move Live Mail stuff to the Windows 8 Mail app.

Since it will probably be around for awhile (remember Outlook Express?), you may want to reconsider the built-in mail app. It's been improved quite a bit. It's doesn't have all the features of Live Mail, but it has most everything you need for a personal account.

Here's a video on the updated features that make it more viable as a daily use mail app. And even this video is about a year old, so it's gotten even better.

Oops, forgot to answer your question about turning Mail off.

When you are in the Mail App, go to the Charms bar and click on Settings. Choose Accounts. Then click on the account name that you setup. You should see the options below. Just change it to manual and you should be good.

I am a bit frustrated with email. I do a lot of email too and spend hours doing it for my music group. craft groups and nature club. I use Thunderbird. It is easy for me to organize and use. Last year it has begun to slow down and I get messages, "not responding." I have Windows 8.1. I have visited all the forums and applied all the fixes they recommend but it still gives me this problem.

I think I would like to try another email program. I see the recommendations of Live Mail. Live mail looks blah blah on my computer and is hard for me to use..at least I think it is. When I click a link on the web to send an email live mail comes up and it's what I see.

Any advice would be appreciated for any other type of email program recommended to me. I think I should give up thunderbird now.

Thanks.
Sue

Thanks again, David. I have to think about this really. It's new for me to not have an email program in my computer. When I got my first computer I used outlook express and it was nice and easy. Then I had trouble and went to thunderbird which sort of looks the same. I know in my mind you are prolly right but I need to take some time to think about it. Thanks!
