Just updated my desktop and it came installed with Windows 8.1. Previously used Vista & XP. Thought I had set up user accounts etc correctly. Have a Hotmail and talktalk account supposedly installed but now my talktalk email looks totally different from Vista and will receive but will not reply or send. I log into it through 'google/talktalkmail otherwise using the mail icon it opens just like Hotmail and I have only my limited hotmail contacts. Totally confused as to what is going on and where I might have gone wrong. Have tried various suggestions from other sites but no luck as some suggestions were far too technical - I need an idiots guide with no assumptions that I know where to access various settings etc. I do not have a 'start button' . Can anyone help this silver surfer - hating W8.1 before I've even got started .

2 questions to start with...

  1. What is the bit of your email address after the @? Is it @talktalk.net? We need this to check the settings which should be as shown below.
  2. What program do you use to look at your e-mail? Is it the Windows 8 Mail App (which looks something like the picture below)?
If so my guess is you'll need to change your outgoing port number from 25 to 587. If you are using the Mail App and xxx@talktalk.net then you would change this by opening the account, pressing the :winkey: + C, choose settings then accounts and then picking your talktalk account. Please though answer the 2 questions first as other mail programs are different.
