IE11 Closing web page stops download but you can resume

Hi there

IE11 seems to have a strange "Feature". When you close a Web site with an active download the whole thing closes and the download disappears -- IE 11 shows no windows open.

However press CTRL+J and you'll see the download lists again. If there's no activity press PAUSE and then press RESUME and then it should continue from where it stopped.

To some this might seem obvious but I've seen people re-start a 2hr download because they thought they had lost their currently active download when they accidentally closed the web site.

Cheers

Hi,
Interesting find I'll have to test that later this evening,
Are you mostly using metro interface or desktop ?
Cheers.
Just out of curiosity why would some close ie during a download ?

Hi there

If it's say a LONG download you might have a few other web pages open and it's easy to close them without realising a download is taking place -- Easily done especially if you have a lot of web pages open and you click on CLOSE ALL by mistake when closing a web page from IE 11.

Okay yes the boo-boo close ;)
Downloads are basically another process as your probably saying,
I am surprised that the process would be paused even if a user closed all open tabs or windows or just the original download page on purpose or accidently,
It's much different than screaming a video or music you'd be saving to the hdd even though it's default is the downloads folder the download would still be going to programs or programs x86 after scanning...
So the pause is the intriguing part :/

The exception might be if the user is not downloading a program and just a large data file ?

I'm not sure what settings you have that are different to mine, however if I start a download then close all Internet Explorer windows, the Windows Download Manager window automatically opens itself and the download keeps going.

This screenshot is just after closing IE11. Prior to closing, only IE windows were open (no download manager window was visible):

Hi there

I had no pages visible at all from IE -- all the tabs were closed -- could be that the download is still running as a BACKGROUND process but unless you know that the only way to make it re-appear when all the main IE windows are closed is CTRL-J - at least on my machine. Then it re-appears sometimes though it looks as if no activity is taking place which is why I click the PAUSE and then RESUME - maybe that awakes it from a sleep and kickstarts it again.

Cheers

The download your referring to is going to the desktop,
Jimbo is referring to downloading to the downloads folder the default location unless a user uses save as..
I hate speaking for Jimbo though
