Welcome to the forums, Porthmadog.

Windows 8.1 or Windows 8.1 Update (released April 8)?

Can you click on IE from the Metro/Modern interface and it works? Also, since I don't know how savvy you are about Windows 8/8.1, did you right click on the IE tile in the Metro interface and then click on "Pin to Taskbar"?

I just tried both and they work for me (I use Firefox).

We can start here, and if need be, go further.

Hi
Thanks for your reply. I did right click the Explorer icon in the Start Up screen. I can access the internet from the icon in the start up screen but I can only open a window on the desktop with the toolbar showing. When I click on the tools item on the tool bar the majority of the items are ' greyed out ' I,am at a loss to explain how this is happening. I am not a computer whiz by any stretch. I'll just have to keep looking.

Let's try another approach . . . As you will see, I'm not the greatest at instructions, but hopefully you can follow my train of thought.

1. Unpin the icon from the task bar.

2. Search for This PC; by the time you've typed T h i, you'll see "This PC".

3. "This PC" should be highlighted so press 'Enter'.

4. This brings you to the "old My Computer" page with your C:\ drive showing.

5. When you click on C:\, you will see Program Files [64 bit] or Program Files (x86) [32 bit]. Click on the appropriate one and look for Internet Explorer.

6. So now, you're at C:\>Program Files>Internet Explorer. Click on IE.

7. Look for iexplore.exe; once you've found it, you can either right click and "pin to taskbar" or right click and drag it to your task bar. Either way, it will be pinned.

8. See if that will work for you.

BTW, in Windows 8/8.1, this will work for pretty much any program you have; just be sure to pin the correct .exe to the taskbar.

Hi again
I did what you have said but 'ixexplore.exe' file does NOT exist in either the (64 bit) or the (32bit) ???:sarc:

That's very odd, because it must exist for the tile to work when you click on it.

C:\Program Files>Internet Explorer>iexplore?

iexplore should be about halfway down the list and the last one to have the little blue E in front of it.

How far do you get in the above path before nothing is available to you?

Note: i e xplore (just in case you're searching and misspelled it)
