I have updated my Win 8.1 x64 PC with the latest updates - update 1 in particular. IE fails to start. I looked at the event viewer and found the following. I have Avast!, MalwareBytes installed. I am able to access the internet through other programs and retrieve email with Thunderbird. I do have a VPN but I am not experiencing any issues with it. Can't find much about this error on Google or MS. Any clues? Thanks.

After battling to get the 8.1 update downloaded in the first place and finding a solution I (like you) found that i.e.11 wouldn't open. No great shakes as I use Firefox but nevertheless.

My solution was to uninstall Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit which appears to be a known conflict. It's not the main MB programme itself but an additional Beta download from their site.

Hope this helps.

I gave up.
I completely deleted my system and started all over from Win 8. Reloaded all updates etc. It finally works. I have no idea what the problem is. I will note that my system runs much slower than it did before the update. I don't know what that is all about. I also use MBAM. After the OS rebuild the system ran slow. After re-installing all my applications including MBAM the system still runs slow. However, the IE 11 issue went away. I generally use Firefox and did not have any issues with it. Or with MBAM.

If your system runs slower after that Update1, it's not applied correctly, try once more without Malwarebytes( remove it from Programs temporarily) and start from scratch. It's better to rectify it at this point as your system should run faster.

I rebuilt my machine from scratch - I installed 8.0, 8.1, then the update. No issues and the problem went away. I just noticed the machine was slower (longer to boot and less responsive). Then I installed other applications and observed that nothing changed in terms of boot time or responsiveness. Not a major deal. My problem, i.e., IE 11 not working, has gone away. It's just a little slower.
