Webpages with .pdf do not display in browser- Windows 8.1

I'm running windows 8.1 and any webpage that has a .pdf extention will not display. I get a black X in the upper left corner or just a white page. I've tried IE & Firefox neither one will open a PDF. However, I installed Google Chrome and it will open PDF's. Any help?

You generally need a plugin for browsers to open PDF files. Do you have Adobe reader installed on your PC?
I am pretty sure installing adobe reader automatically fixes this. For the time being, you can right click on a .pdf link and choose save link as, it then should download the pdf onto your PC


Get Adobe Reader uncheck the McAfee addon unless you want it. if you do have it installed already, I would recomend updating it before doing anything else, just to see if it fixes your issue.

Open adobe reader, click on help, check for updates.

Ok that's weird... Firefox is now working but I still can't get IE do show a PDF page. AS an example: http://www.allen-heath.com/media/AP8665_1WZ412_16_user_guide.pdf

I would just use Firefox but I have work webpages that will only work with IE so I'm forced to use IE for that. However with windows 8.1 now it won't open the PDF pages I need.

Well if its any help, internet explorer only gave me the option to download it, it wouldn't open for me either, in the browser

Open IE
Go to Tools in the menu bar
Click on Manage Add-ons
In the left pane click on Toolbars and Extensions
In the right pane make sure Adobe PDF (Adobe Systems Incorp) is enabled.
Restart IE, try again.

Adobe doesn't appear in Manage Add-ons for me.

I did check that before. Adobe is enabled.
Did a repair and restart, still the same issue.

Go to tools-options-program tab-set programs-set programs access and computer defaults. Also in adobe make sure it is set to be the default reader.

The button for Custom is on - Use current browser is selected and Chrome, IE, & Firefox are enabled.

Hello antspants In reply I have Adobe Reader and the latest version, everything is the latest version and still cannot download a pdf file or any type of download. Tried to download Firefox and get unable to download message. One thing though, I was able to download pdf and txt files on it till the June 21, 2014 update of windows 8.1. Been using windows since windows 3.1 and Windows 8 and 8.1 are the biggest nightmare I've experienced.
