Hi guys,
New to the site and fairly new to 8. I really like it.
I am having some issues with IE 11. First if i got to the tools then try to open internet options, nothing happens. I can click on ot but it doesn't open. Most of the other items in the tools and other tabs work ok. Second my wife needs IE to run the web based software for her work. If she tries hitting certain tabs nothing happens. also if she is on her mail site she can refresh and open emails but can't compose one, because while the button is available, nothing happens when she hits it. But the email can be opened on other browsers and works fine on chrome and firefox.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Ed

Welcome mate!

First, I would recommend installing all recommended and important updates from windows update, especially those concerned with IE.

Next, reset IE. Try typing in Internet Options in your search to pull it up outside the browser, and click the Advanced tab. Click reset... Let me know if it fixes anything

Hi Dusty
All updates installed as of this morning, just checked nothing new. Tried the reset and still don't have the internet options available from the tools drop down.

Thanks

Ooo, this could be a hard one ;)

Try disabling add-ons. Go through your program list, and uninstall anything that has the words toolbar, or coupon, or anything that is an add-on for IE. Then go into Tools>Manage Add-ons and disable everything, and close/open IE. You'll want to select 'All Add-ons' under 'show' so that you can see them all.s

What antivirus program do you have? Make sure it doesn't have any add-ons or influence over IE, and disable any protections it offers for IE within its settings. Go to the Malwarebytes website to install a handy extra, free scan to compliment your antivirus: Malwarebytes : Thank you for download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - this will allow you to see if you missed a few things, and Mbam is really good at catching malware.

If it catches stuff, remove and restart. IE has a built in troubleshooter that you might like to try. Troubleshoot Internet Explorer Performance:

For the above post, keep in mind that you can always re-enable add-ons later, after we finish troubleshooting. Also, delete any add-on that is extra and you find that you do not want on your system. This is all assuming you can access the manage add-ons section.

Hey Dust
Tried it all, still no good, But thanks so much for all of your work/recommendations.
I run MSE, found 4 items and removed. Ran Malware and 20 removed all. I then ran both again(long) nothing found. Disabled all ad-ons. Ran the troubleshooter, it found one small thing and corrected it. I have restarted the system and still no good on the IO. My wife also went to her email and she still can't select the compose button. It is available and can click it but nothing opens, just like the Internet options.

Again thanks for all your help.

Hey mate,

Sorry to hear. It sounds like something on a deeper level. Try refreshing the computer: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2293-refresh-windows-8-a.html

Aside from that, you may be looking at a reinstall, or help from someone who knows more than I do. Sorry to hear that it isn't working out.

If I had to guess, I would say malware messed something up.

BTW, you should only have defender. MSE is for windows 7 and Vista. Do you have Microsoft Security Essentials installed?

Also, do you have or have you had other antiviruses installed? Sometimes they leave files behind or multiple installations mess up a system by clashing. Only ever use a single antivirus program, and make sure it is completely removed if you want to switch. Revo Uninstaller free is a helpful tool in cases like this.

Hey Dusty
I meant defender. I just built the computer about 4 weeks ago, so no there hasn't been anything else on here. I'm not going to have time to "refresh" as I'll be traveling all week, but again thanks for all your help. I'll let you know how i make out next weekend.

Thanks
Ed

So i finely got a chance to try the refresh. And, i can't do it. It get to about 56% then goes to the recovery screen in Media. it asks if i want to open 8.1 goto refresh... then after i choose 8.1, windows opens and it tells me it couldn't complete and nothing was changed.

Thanks all for the help, i've really had it with this POS IE.

Not necessarily the fault of IE, but the fact remains that something happened to prevent use of aspects of IE. Unfortunately, I couldn't figure it out. Let me know if you are having other trouble in other areas of the computer, as it might have something to do with this problem.

Consider doing a bootable malware scan to check for any other infections that your AV program isn't getting: Utility Spotlight: Scan for Malware Outside of Windows | TechNet Magazine

I don't remember if you were able, but could you do a repair install?: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/26095-repair-install-windows-8-a.html

The only other options I can think of are waiting for another person to suggest a fix, or reinstalling :(

Oh, did you answer this question yet?

Speaking about antivirus programs: Consider (temporarily) disabling your current one and see if that helps with the internet problem (after a computer restart). Some AVs will keep internet from working properly for some reason...

If you would like, post a pic of your programs installed, and I'll recommend if you should remove some. I would be keeping an eye out for things like toolbars, search engines, etc.

Hey Dusty, Really haven't seen issues with anything but IE. I tried the refresh, i'm guessing not the same as repair? I really don't want to do a reinstall, but...
I am currently running the Win Defender offline, doing the full scan, so far over 2 hours.
All i am running is defender. i know i had the coupon bar, thanks wide, but that really is it. once done with the scan do i just do a screenshot of add/remove? That will get you a list of my programs right? Or do you want something else.

I can't thank you enough for taking the time to work on this with me.

Sorry, yes you did answer about your antivirus. And yes, that screen shot would be awesome.

Additionally, I have found that while Defender is a good antivirus, it seems to pass over some things it may consider 'not so harmful', or just doesn't detect them. As this is the case, and only because your computer is having some problems, I recommend you try Avast as your preferred Antivirus. You do not have to install it by any means, but you might like it. It seems to perform better than defender, and catches things better. It may find something else hiding out on your computer.

Also, a repair is different, but it changes a lot more. Only do it after reading through the warnings and determining if you want to.

I highly (can't stress it enough) recommend you to remove that coupon toolbar. ANY toolbar is more than likely slowing things down or giving you problems. Don't know how you feel about keeping it, but any coupon program I ever encountered was the result of malware... lol. You could see if removing it helps at all (after the removal of all toolbars, and a computer restart if you decide you want to remove them, which I recommend).

Hey mate, you can search for things using your search bar, no need for toolbars:

Untitled.png

You can also change search providers if yours was altered somehow. The most prominent ones are Bing and Google. See how: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2868-internet-explorer-10-search-provider-add-new.html (also applies to IE11, etc)

Concerning the programs you posted, I'll need a bit of time to research them, you've got quite a few :D

You have a registry cleaner? Very very dangerous if you use it... The best cleaner is Ccleaner, but no program is infallible, I personally recommend against using it. I HIGHLY recommend against ANY other registry cleaner. I may get some more opinions on this...
