So I'm wondering if this is true or not, I use hotmail/outlook email, and alot of spam emails have images, and I've heard a sender can get your ip just by you opening their messages, is this true?

If the pictures are accessed online (meaning you didn't dowload them as attachments) then definitely yes. But that's not the main problem...

When accessing online pictures in an email, it confirms to whoevers hosts the pictures that this specific email has been opened, this usually results in even more spam mails being sent to your email adress. Those kind of pictures can be hidden and as small as a pixel to prevent you noticing them.

You should check that your email reader has either disable images or disable html checked to prevent that.

Ah I'm not worried about spam really, it's just these "hackers" are trying to get my IP address lmao, so shouldn't Outlook/Hotmail block Images by default then, also not too sure how to disable images in Outlook.

I guess if you're worried about your IP being leaked you could also use an anonymous proxy, most internet applications can use them. Google for some free ones.

Most large companies like Google & Microsoft use image proxies which transcode all images for safe viewing.

you can install email client e.g. thunderbird which allows you to decide if email should be downloaded with the pictures or picture placeholders only. Configure for Hotmail and it will download all emails with picture placeholders. If you trust sender then click on the placeholder and pictures will get downloaded.

Email Clients like thunderbird etc. ,instead of web Email Clients are more risky right?
