IE11 Enchanced Protected mode

Hi,
I was just wondering what is enhance protect mode in IE11.
It is very annoying when it comes to opening PDF's using adobe reader.
If I try and open one I get a message box saying something about enhance protect mode. I click ok, it the site freezes and every time I try to go back onto the site it freezes and then I have to clear cache. if I click cancel then the browser shuts down completely.

The reason the message comes up is because with Enhanced Protected mode enabled, IE won't run add-ons that aren't 64-bit. For some reason, Adobe still don't provide a 64-bit add-on for Adobe Reader, therefore when you encounter a website that has a PDF file, IE will ask you if you want to disable Enhanced Protected Mode in order to run the 32-bit PDF reader plugin (AcroPDF.dll). When it does this, I think it switches to the 32-bit version of IE, instead of the 64-bit version.

Internet Explorer 'could' play better with PDF files by asking whether you want to save the PDF instead, but it doesn't. Maybe Microsoft are trying to 'encourage' Adobe to release a 64-bit plug-in? But I agree with you, PDF's are a PITA with IE running with Enhanced Protected Mode enabled, so the sooner Adobe release a 64-bit Reader/plugin the better.

I'm not sure why you're having problems with it freezing though, as it usually just shows a blank page with a grey crossed out circle if it can't open the PDF. Have you tried un-installing Adobe Reader and reinstalling the latest version (11.0.05)? Although, even if that cures the freezing problem, it will still prompt you to disable Enhanced Protected Mode to open PDF's.

The other option would be to right click on the PDF link and select 'save target as...', then save the PDF to your desktop before opening it. But you'll only be able to do this if there's an actual hyper-link. For example, some websites use buttons instead of links, and you can't do it with Google Search results as they're not a direct link to the PDF.

Is it safe do so? Will I be at more risk of viruses?

The tutorial will give you more details, but you would have better security by leaving it enabled, and just saving the PDF file to say your desktop to open and read separately instead. At least until Adobe comes out with an EPM supported version of the add-on.
