Solved Lost using IE Metro

I am a long time user of PC's and Macs and have had to replace my dear old friend of eleven years, a Windows XP desktop. Last year I bought a new laptop running Windows 7 just because I had heard from my friends that Windows 8 was such a pain.

I am have a learning curve issue with Windows 8 and IE Metro. I would like to have a default IE where I can see the back button, tools, home, view favorites, feeds, and history buttons. Is there something I am missing? It seems that there are fewer options in Metro, in fact, I have yet to find the Internet Options button or any buttons in Metro.

Oddly enough, I am using a traditional IE browser window as I type because I just joined this site and the message in my mail browser said to click the link to get here. So, I know it is possible for it to run in Win8.

Thanks ahead of time for your help. It is painful for me to set aside being the teacher and becoming student!

Daniel

Hello Daniel, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Internet Explorer in Windows 8 comes with two views/modes. A Modern UI (metro) and a desktop view.

When you open IE from your Start screen, it opens in Modern UI view by default.

When you open the pinned IE on your taskbar from your desktop, it opens in desktop view by default.

If you like, you could switch to desktop view from within the modern IE as well.

Hope this helps, :)

I use the metro IE.

Back and Forward button in metro are mid screen left and right center.
Back is also handled by backspace or Alt Left arrow (back) and Alt Right arrow (forward).

Tools are managed by the desktop IE.
Home is set with the desktop IE in Internet Options.

Tabs and address bar are handled by Win + Z or right clicking the page.
Closing is handled by grabbing the hand at the top of the screen and dragging down or Alt + F4.
Switching is handled by Win + D or Alt + Tab or edge UI thumbs.
Favorites can be managed and renamed using the desktop IE.
View favorites can be accessed by Win + Z and putting the cursor in the address bar.
History and settings can be managed using the desktop IE.
History can also be cleared using charms.
View History is also on the desktop.
Zooming can be managed by either charms or desktop versions.
Frequently used listings can be removed by clearing the history.
I've never used feeds.
