Hello
I have been watching tutorials about this product and am confused.
It seems that all content is sandboxed or not including email. While emailing, and in virtual mode, how do you actually send the email if you are in this environment?
Thank you

The sandbox is like a quarantine in your system. It is isolated from your system and will not allow other programs to access your system. Although Sandboxie, by design, is not isolated from the Internet. Some people use Sandboxie to download things and make sure they are safe, then transfer said things onto their systems.

You can also use a Virtual Machine on your computer, and use it to like a normal machine. There's a setting where you can let the virtual machine use your network card to send and receive data. Other computers won't know that it's "virtual". A computer signal, whether from an actual computer or a virtual computer, is still a signal.

I hope that makes some kind of sense.

Yes, your message made a lot of sense. I guess there is a feature that allows you to either directly email or transfer the email to the regular pc.

I tried a VM but at my skill level it was difficult. I installed Oracle with Ubuntu, and everything worked well. However, I was not able to find drivers to print and was not sure what was actual and what was virtual.
I seem to have this inability to distinguish which is which when I perform a task to see whether it is completed or when it is isolated or deleted.
I also did not know how to use my email.
I know a VM takes a lot of room and resources whereas Sandboxie requires less. However, the VM covers everything all the time. I have a 1T hard drive, 6 GB ram, Intel i5, 3.30 GHz.
I am struggling between the two because when I am not behind my router, I do not feel too secure.

If you feel worried about download questionable content, Sandboxie should suffice. A virtual machine used to test downloaded files isn't exactly "practical" in my terms; better used for testing things like programs.

When you say e-mail, I'm thinking about a browser client, not an e-mail program like Windows Live.

I'll say that ~95% of infections are due to people download random things (social media and advertisements that tell you you're missing software).

I agree with your comments and try to browse smartly.
Could you explain how one uses an email program like Outlook.com or Windows Live Mail just to mention 2 in a Sandbox or VM ?
If you are within a virtual environment, how do you access and utilize such programs .

In a virtual machine, you would use an e-mail client like any other program outside a virtual machine. Think about it this way. You have your operating system, then you use a program to run (or virtualize) another operating system within your normal operating system. Therefore, you are able to run any program in your virtual machine, including an e-mail client (download and install it like you would on a normal machine). Take note, virtual machines are "slower" than your normal environment.

On the other hand, you have Sandboxie. It differs from a virtual machine because it's not a virtual machine. All it does is install or even run any program on your operating system in a "protected box" which isolates it from your computer so that any program that is run cannot damage (or infect) your system. I'm repeating myself, but I'm trying to explain it in a clear manner. Hope this helps a little.

I do understand what you have related.
I think my web based email would be ok but my wife uses the ISP's POP 3 which I hope I can find a work around for.
I am looking at using Puppy or Mint in a stick right now.
Thank you

Sanboxie

Hello
I am sorry to belabor this but I have been trying to research a couple of features about Sandboxie but tutorials just show how to rid the pc of malware.
if you have your browser sandboxed for protection and send email with your regular email program, how does that program work if it is in a virtual mode? I.e., how do you email is the first question?
Secondly, I you want to perform and action or keep any action rather than rid the machine which is all the tutorials show, how do you do that?
Thank you

It's not a problem, this concept is difficult to "process" because you can't physically touch it. For some people at least.

Have you looked at "Getting Started Tutorial" with Sandboxie? It shows up when you first start Sandboxie.

It looks like this:
Untitled.png

This shows how it works.

Sandboxie can "sandbox" any program, including your browser and/or your e-mail client such as Windows Live (messenger?).

You can right click any shortcut for any program, like so (you can also run files such as PDFs):
Untitled.png

And run it sand-boxed. This will protect your system from that program modifying your system without your permission.

Here I have a PDF document opened through Sandboxie (Notice the yellow highlight around the window; means it's running in Sandboxie):
Untitled.png

If it contained a virus, then it would not be able to affect my system because it's isolated (in a secure room or a box) from the rest of my computer.

Also, to clear up your confusion. The programs are not in a virtual mode. They're running in a "sand-boxed" area on your hard drive. Refer to the first picture I uploaded, it shows how Sandboxie works. I think you're confusing virtual machines with Sandboxie.

Apologies, but I'm having a tough time understanding what you're asking in your second question...

Sandbox

You did a wonderful job explaining what I could, not conceptualize.

I have it now and thank you for taking the time and effort to explain it to me.

You would make a good instructor.

I have to decide between Linux on a stick and Sandboxie.

I am leaning toward the latter especially after viewing your schematics and explanations. I did review all of the tutorials about Sandboxie but it took while to 'sink in. "

Thank
Peter

For what you want to accomplish, I highly recommend Sandboxie. It's a lightweight program and doesn't require too much knowledge of how to operate it.

I'm glad to help.

Thank you again. I can use the free 30 days to get used to it.
May I ask, I can install Norton's Security Suite for free as a Comcast customer.
Would you use that over Win 8 with Defender and the native firewall or stick with MS?

Personally, I strongly recommend you to use Windows Defender. Norton's Security Suite is bloated and does the same exact thing as Windows Defender and Firewall.

The best thing you can do to protect yourself is not to download random things and practice simple safe browsing habits. I've been using Windows Defender for roughly a year and a half. I haven't had any issues.

That is good news as I like simplicity. I have used Windows firewall and Defender for quite a while with no issues so far. Thank you for replying and I am taking your advice.
