Hi,
Firstly I don't know if this is in right section. Anyway I got a virus on windows 7 and decided to put 8 on instead of reinstalling 7. I was using IE10 in 7 and using in it 8. On windows 7 the videos on cnet.com worked fine on 8 the videos dont work unless I tick the option to use software rending instead of GPU.
So I was just wondering what is the difference if I leave it ticked. Will I see a performance difference??

Hello Mitchell,

By default, IE9 and IE10 uses GPU Rendering mode (hardware acceleration). However, some outdated video cards/chips and video drivers do not support GPU hardware acceleration. If IE9 or IE10 determines that your current video card/chip or video driver does not support GPU hardware acceleration, Internet Explorer uses Software Rendering mode (off).

If GPU hardware acceleration is turned off, then you may but not always experience slow performance when you browse a webpage using IE9 or IE10.

Well I have to admit my Graphic card may be starting to shows its age, but the videos were able to play in IE10 without having to have that option enabled. Is there a way I can fix this or would the best way is each time I want to watch a video on that website is to select use software rendering??

If everything works and runs smoothly while using software rendering in IE10, then you could just leave it in that mode.

Do you have the latest AMD video drivers for the 4800 series installed?

I could leave it in that mode but you said it may slow down some sites so yea :p I don't really want slow sites.
Anyway yeah I do have the latest drivers for my graphics card, I installed them last night when I put 8 on my PC

It wouldn't hurt anything to see how it does in software mode. You could always switch it back to GPU hardware mode if you get a site that is slower than normal.

If not, then at least you wouldn't have to keep switching it back and forth until a more permanent solution is found.

I have a geforce gtx 660 OC version. I have the latest drivers but video quality on youtube is seemingly lower than when I have the graphic acceleration off.

choose the rendering that is best for your system. software rendering is not a lower class than hardware rendering. it just means your CPU is solely doing the calculations and interpreting the instructions. since your CPU is doing the work, depending on how powerful your CPU is, it could have an effect on your other software that you have running on your system.

hardware acceleration means that you're using your graphics hardware to decode and interpret the instructions. depending on how the vendor writes the drivers, your GPU may partially accelerate it or completely accelerate it. it's using dedicated hardware to render. because of varying robustness of graphics drivers, hardware rendering may or may not produce the same results as software rendering. for example, even if you have the same instructions to draw a box, your CPU and your GPU may have different interpretations on how to render that box so the result may be slightly different. so for a video, you might have more macroblocking with one solution than with another.

for my older ATI graphics card, hardware acceleration is poorer than software rendering. on my newer ATI card, hardware acceleration is better. it all depends.

a lot of these issues are up to Adobe to deal with as well as the graphics vendors (Nvidia, AMD, Intel). it's Adobe's plugin that determines how the video is played and it's the job of the graphics vendors to interpret that code. if you don't want to deal with Adobe's Flash, you have to force playback through HTML5. however, not all videos are in HTML5 so you'll lose a good chunk of videos.
