Solved Mail app and I.E.

Trying to help my mother-in-law. I don't use the Mail app, but she does (kicking ourselves for not getting Outlook for her). She has I.E. set as her default browser. Every time she clicks a link in an email, this cheesy dumbed-down version of I.E. opens (what is that anyway?!?!) that you can't really do anything with other than view what you've clicked on. I don't see any options for saving favourites there (which is what she wants to do). I could get her to cut and paste the link into the regular version, or switch to Chrome (set up Mail temporarily on my computer, with Chome as default browser, and it worked as I thought it should - opens Chrome that looks normal), but I'd rather keep things simple (she's not great with the computer and this switch to W8 has been enough change!).

How do I get the regular I.E. to open when links in the Mail app are clicked on?

Thanks!

Hi Laura.

Mail App opens links in default browser. Installing another browser and setting it default is as far as I know the only way to avoid IE App opening links.

However, you could show your mother-in-law how easy it is to use IE App, the Windows 8 Internet Explorer App:

- Right click anywhere on the page to see your options. Click the pin icon to either pin the page to Start Screen (create a shortcut tile for one click access), or save it to favorites:

- Right click anywhere on the page to manage your tabs (top of the page):

- Right click anywhere on the page to manage your pinned, recent and favorite sites (bottom of the page):

Thanks, this is helpful. I saw the 'pin' and thought that would only be 'pin to start' - didn't even try to click on it.

(Using the metro IE also Win + Z is useful)

:ar: Also in addition to the above, you asked about (I think) using the desktop version of Internet Explorer instead of the metro.

If you wish to use Internet Explorer on the desktop only (for all links) and the web,
It can be set to default always to the desktop. Open Internet Options > Programs tab > set the defaults (as in the screenshot)

Always in Internet Explorer on the desktop > Open Internet Explorer tiles on the desktop
