Solved I want Outlook 2007 to send and receive @live.no mail

My current email provider is shutting down after 15-odd years in the business. I've changed my Microsoft account ID, removing the old email address (@c2i.net) and creating a new one (@live.no - the .no suffix refers to Norway where I'm living for the moment).

Now I want to configure Outlook 2007 to be able to send and receive mail using the @live.no address.

I've tried adding a new account, but that doesn't work. The process stops up when I'm asked for the password provided by the Internet service provider. If Microsoft (or Hotmail/Outlook/Live.com) are the provider, they haven't given me a password. The one I use to access my Microsoft account doesn't work, obviously.

I'm sure there are instructions somewhere, but finding them is like looking for the old needle in an enormous haystack.

(I just might add that calling the Windows 8 mail service 'Outlook' makes it even harder to find answers to questions involving Office 2007's Outlook.)

So let me get this straight... is this the situation?

Situation Before:
Email address=<your email>@c2i.net

Email password=<password1> - this is the password you use to look at your c2i email on webmail for example

Microsoft Account password=<password2> - this is the password you use to log in to your microsoft account. It's probably different, not least because Microsoft can't see c2i.net's servers; they're just using your email address to identify you.

After
Email address=<your email>@live.no

Email password=<password3> - this is the password you use to look at your email on webmail and could well be a different one

Microsoft Account password=<password2> - this is the password you use to log in to your microsoft account. If you've kept the same Microsoft account (but with a different email) it should be the same as before.


If I've understood correctly, I think it's password3 that you want - whatever password was set up when you created the live.no email address. Although it's all Microsoft, it may not be the same as the password for your email as for your Microsoft account.

Absolutely spot on! My @c2i.net address belongs to a Norwegian telephone company, Tele2, who wants to concentrate on the mobile phone market so they're giving their email customers the push. All associated passwords, user names, incoming and outgoing email servers are theirs, and have nothing to do with Microsoft or anybody else.

And you're also right, my Microsoft account password - password2 - is different from password1.

So password3 is what I'm after. Now, on the web Outlook page, > inbox > options > Managing your account > your email account, my new Microsoft account email address is listed (my name@live.no) as a "send and receive" account. If I click on "account details", I'm taken to the Microsoft Account page (where I can change my account name - which I just did this morning).

However, on the "your email account" page, there's a list of things I can set up: Outlook aliases, add an email account (just send, or send and receive). There's also information on the "Default 'From' address", where I can use the @live.no address as the default address if I want.

Nothing about email account passwords or anything. Apparently, I can direct mail from my @c2i.net account (which doesn't expire until April 30) to my Microsoft mail account, but not the other way round - to Office 2007's Outlook.

In other words, I'm still stuck.

I don't want to use the web browser as my access to my email account, since i've got masses of stuff (receipts, messages, everything but the kitchen sink) stored in folders in Outlook 2007.

Don't know the answer I'm afraid, as I think it's to do with the way the two Microsoft passwords are linked.

So was there a point where you had your new @live.no address independently before you linked it to your old Microsoft account? What was its password at that point?

Another thought - if the @live.no is now the primary email for your Microsoft account, maybe if you change it from the Microsoft Account, (I think we're up to password4) the new password cascades to the @live.no account (so password2 and password3 get synchronised and both become password4) and it might work with Outlook 2007? I'm guessing here of course!

Means you'd have a different password too to the one you currently have; I don't know if there might be rules that stop it changing back, but you might be able to, and I assume once it's in synch it would stay synchronised.

Problem solved

Microsoft, it turns out, has invented a little gadget to merge hotmail accounts with various versions of Office Outlook, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 365.

You download a little piece of software, run it, and Bob's your uncle, your hotmail (now Outlook) email account is added to your Outlook 2007 setup. After installation, the only thing you have to do when you start Outlook again is to enter your name, hotmail address (my name@live.no or whatever), and your Microsoft Account password. There's no special email password.

Now, if I want to send an email, I'm offered the choice of which account to send it from, @c2i or @live.no. Absolutely brilliant.
