Cannot get IE to load a page on Windows 8 laptop

I am not sure how this started or what exactly I did to create this but I cannot get IE to run on my Windows 8 machine. This is a fairly new (one month old) laptop I bought with Windows 8 on it.

IE was working OK on this machine, but I must have done something wrong over the weekend. I also installed Firefox over the weekend too (out of frustration with IE, could that have caused a problem?). Firefox is operating fine, so I know I have a functional internet connection. When I open IE, it just spins its wheels forever and times out, regardless of what site I am trying to open.

I disabled all add-ons in IE (Tools | Programs | Manage Add-Ons and disabled all).

I "reset" IE doing the following steps:
a. Press Windows key + R then type “inetcpl.cpl” without quotes and press Enter.
b. Under Advanced tab, click on Reset.
c. Check the Delete personal settings box.
d. Click on Reset and then Close.

I have restarted my laptop. I can run Firefox fine but cannot get anything to load in IE. I'm lost. Any ideas?

IE really sucks.

See picture for removing & readding IE.
I scrapped it & use Chrome.

I wish I could recall what exactly was driving me bonkers about IE over the weekend that prompted me to install Firefox, but I chalked it up to my inexperience with Windows 8 and this goofy "metro" versus old-style desktop of IE.

I am not opposed to just using Firefox and Chrome and leaving IE out of the equation, but it just seems so stupid that it would be this hard to use. GAHHHHHH
