    Windows 8 - OUtlook

I just got a new laptop with Windows 8 and have begun the laborious task of moving everything (programs, faves, docs, music, pics, etc) over to new laptop.

I have been using Outlook for contacts and emails forever and don't want to lose all my contacts. I noticed somewhere in Windows 8 that Outlook is there. Is this really Outlook or is it Outlook Express? In other words will this do what my old Outlook (2003) was doing. Also, how can I easily get all my contacts over to new laptop?

The Outlook in Win 8, if you are seeing it, is the web based e-mail service that used to be called Hotmail. There is no more Outlook Express (it was eliminated in Vista).

Office 2003 is not supposed to be supported in Win 8 but I have MS Office 2003 Pro installed. I'm using Outlook 2003 for my ISP e-mail without problems.

    Windows Mail

So...I bought a new laptop with Windows 8. A little confusing and frustrating at times, but i'm sure I will figure it out over time. Gotta say, the idea of buying a laptop that doesnt come pre-installed with Outlook and Office is a pain. Plus my 2003 edition isn't supported. Love the way MS nickle and dimes you like that.

My question is about Windows Mail/Outlook. If I don't put Outlook 2003 on this laptop and I don't buy 2010 or 2013 version....is Windows mail/Outlook ok?

If it is ok, how do I get my contacts from my old laptop (Outlook 2003) onto this new laptop using Windows mail/Outlook?

How do I get my Verizon emails forwarded to this laptop on Windows Mail/Outlook?

Any help would be awesome. Thx.

UPDATE - I figured out how to get my Verizon emails forwarded into this Outlook/Hotmail thingy. I imported all my contacts as a csv file and it says that it imported over 900 contacts. The question is, where are they? I don;t see them anywhere in the Outlook/Hotmail inbox-home screen. so far I hate this email program.

    Hi Sisley,
If you open up your File Explorer on the Desktop you should find your Contacts listed there. I'll show you how to tie them up with your People app too, because all your email addresses will go through there. Open your People app, open the Charmsbar>Settings>Accounts>Add an account, then select Outlook & fill in the details that follow. I have been trying to find out how to get all my contacts in File Explorer over to People, but so far no luck. But if you type an email address in People & then click on that person's name it will go to 'send email' & it should show up in your Mail email ready to send. However, you can select a person's name in Contacts & send it to the 'Mail' email section ready to send.

I see my contacts in the File Explorer under documents as a csv file. I want to know how to get all of these contacts over to People (what a horrible set up for contacts, by the way). I try to add account and it only allows me to add an email account, I dont see where to import contacts anywhere. This is so frustrating.

My contacts have been moved but not my address books. Is there a way to move address books? If not, how do I build one in this People app?

The problem I have with outlook is; when you first log on to windows 8 it auto logs on to your (Hotmail) outlook account. So if you want to look at any emails you can use your email tile or the old way via the internet and it automatically opens your account. The problem I'm having is I have to log out then back in again before I can see my mail. It's a bit of a pain how or what am I doing wrong.

this new Outlook is either the most limited program ever or the most confusing. I can't figure out how to build an address book, how to save an email to a folder, how to sort my emails alphabetically or any other way. It seems to be 1985.

Outlook does not come with Windows 8. You have to purchase a copy if you want Outlook. What comes with Windows 8 is a Mail app, and it is pretty basic. The People app is your address book and you use the "Move" feature to save an email to another folder -- right click on the email you want to move. This brings up menu bar at screen bottom. Click "Move" and then click the folder you want the email moved to. I don't know of a way to sort.

If you don't want to purchase Outlook, there are lots of other options like Mozilla Thunderbird or Pegasus Mail.

    Hope this helps.
