I have a HP Pavilion desktop of course running Windows 8 Home

When I first logged on I decided to use my Hotmail account and the primary account as Outlook.com  When I first called an agent for some help he said that it was now settled and I could not have a local account. That I did not want!! He said I had to call MS to have it switched off. I just did a complete recovery since it was new and this time signed in with a local account. I have not liked Outlook.com ever since I tried it on my XP machine. So I deleted the MAIL app. Now, after a few weeks I'm changing my mind about using Outlook.com as an added account but not the primary account. But I can't find the app. When I go to the app store and click to get them nothing happens. When I do click on the People and Calendar metro tiles, which are still there, it simple goes back to the Metro Start page???

I DO NOT WANT OUTLOOK.COM to be the primary logon account. I want me as a user admin as a local account but I understand once this is done you can add Outlook.com but the pc is still a local account. However I can not seem to get them re installed When I go to the charms and select SETTINGS I do not see ACCOUNTS like a lot of Google links have suggested. Is there any help here? I'd appreciate it. jack

UPDATE: I did get to the store finally with IE browser and it reports YOU OWN THIS APP. But I cannot understand how to configure them. When I swipe the left side I see that MAIL, CALENDAR and PEOPLE are active. When I click on them it goes to the large screen showing the icon for the app and then just goes back to the Metro page??

Hello Jack,

Double check in your all Apps screen to see if "Mail" may still be there to "Pin to Start" again.

If it's not there, then you may have uninstalled it.

You could search in the Store for "Mail" or look in "Your Apps" to install the "Mail, Calendar, Peoplem and Me...." app and restore it.

Hope this helps, :)
Shawn

It surely did restore them. Now ... what am I missing? I click on them and the screen goes to the full color with the icon of the app, i.e. mail icon ... then goes back to the metro start page. I know there's possibly the idea that I have to add the account. Keeping in mind I DO NOT want to "switch" to the MS account, I just want to add it. I was told this was a very simple thing to do once you had initially started and created a local account. The only place I have found about mail was where you could "switch" to a MS account and that's a "noway" I want the machine on a local account but able to access the MS account. Do you have any idea where I do this. I have gone to Settings but see no ACCOUNTS listed. ??

Sorry, but you must be signed in to a Microsoft account to be able to use the Mail app. :(

I do have a MS account, have had it Hotmail since 1996. The agent assured me and I'm sure I've read where you can use Outlook.com after you have made you pc to sign in on a local account. I'll do more investigation I will figure it. Thanks!

Did you happen to disable UAC by chance?

If so, it breaks Store apps, and prevents them from running.

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/5509-user-account-control-uac-change-settings-windows-8-a.html

Changed that to lowest. Programs didn't run still. Is there not somewhere I have to register my Hotmail account within windows 8 to use Outlook.com. If it's available to download from the internet would that work? Sorry, and thanks for hanging in there with me. I've about exhausted this I suppose. :\

Just as a test, create yourself another new administrator account, sign in to it, and see if when you Mail, it asks you to sign in to Mail with a Microsoft account.

If not, then you're going to need to switch an account to be a Microsoft account to be able to use the Store and Mail. :(

okay, now we're cookin' ... I think. I Googled how to do this and I went to SETTINGS>CHANGE PC SETTINGS>USERS>ADD AN ACCOUNT It appears it's asking me sign into windows with an account or create one. I happen to have a Hotmail account and I know that will work. If I continue this process where will that have me? Will I have to sign on to this user to use Outlook.com or will it be accessible now through the local account or the how do you expect this will work now? I haven't a clue. I am holding off before doing it. Thanks so much! Jack :dinesh: ( thought I'd try out the silly elephant. lol I am on the heavy side, however not Republican but Independent. But I've always wanted to try the little critter ) ha!

By doing that, you will be creating a new Microsoft account to have in addition to your current local account.

Personally, I would recommend to switch your local account to be a Microsoft account instead. This way you will be able to use the Store and Mail without having to start over with a new account.

Yes I see. The drawbacks, to me that is, would be having to sign in with a password every time and having all your info out there in "the Cloud" ... whatever that is. I guess in an allegory everyone can see a cloud, just like anyone, whoever?, now can see your info. I should review a comparison of local to MS account. What info would now be out there at a minimum. Just your email? Could you keep other documents, etc locally? I'm thinking out loud here and wondering.

Well I just blew away a whole response. I was going to edit it, cancelled, and then somehow erased the original. I had said I guess the drawbacks, in my mind, are the having login each time. And I'm not sure how much more of my info I like out there on the "Cloud" To me a good name for something almost anyone can see now, like a cloud hanging out there. I wanted Outlook.com mainly for the email. I guess that wouldn't be so bad. But then I'd be giving up my contacts, calendar. Does the small print say they can use my contacts? I don't like that idea at all. I basically have been so frustrated not being able to use Outlook from XP. I have tried others, Thunderbird, Pegasus and several others I've been very disappointed with. I guess I just thought that Outlook.com might be good after all and that's all I wanted it for, the email side that is, but you have to have an MS account to use Outlook.com. Which as I said exposes more of your personal info. What to do?

Hello, jackdashack. Welcome to EightForums. :)

I've subscribed to this thread for solution reasons. If I may interject about the Cloud. I'm very cautious of it myself. My rule is that I never store sensitive personal files there whatsoever. I haven't trusted it that far, anyways.

I think hackers could care less about us unless we are millionaires or have info that's worth millions to sell. That's often what they target.

All I can say is that I've been using my Live account to sign into 8 since June without incident. MS is not in the business to sell anything I have or to peer into my computer at personal files. It's simply never going to happen.

Do what you may, of course, but for me I'm enjoying the experience of 8 with some more extent into the Cloud. I use the Mail, Calendar, and People apps which are basically the same as my Live email accounts I've been using for years.

Good luck in whatever you decide. Again, welcome.

You could set Windows to sign in to your user account automatically at startup if you wish to avoid that.

Ms. H.Gipsy ... of course you are so right. You have used the same reasoning on me that I have used with folks that have told me over the last decade they won't purchase online. I tell them when they swipe their cards their info is going over the same lines .... right? So your reasoning rings true. I thank you also for this input. Both agents here have been very wise and helpful. jack :dinesh: taa raaa raaa boom dee aaay! ( just had to do that )
