My step dad has windows 8 setup for his old laptop, which is on windows vista. He has a shortcut on his desktop that takes him right to his mail. Once inside his mail it looks like outlook; I don't know if windows mail and outlook are the same or not, but how can I get this installed on the mail in the start up screen. I got to the point where it is asking for the domain and username and think I entered everything correct, but still nothing. Is there a flaw with windows 8 and I need to go around it some other way or am I missing something here? Also if this cant work does outlook have a web based mail gui?

Windows Live Mail in '8' - how?

It sounds as though he has windows live mail and if this is the case then this can be setup via the Windows Live site although I do not know if it's compatible with windows 8, I am hoping so as this is my query, how do I save, or export, my WL Mail currently in XP and soon to be '8', or will this still be available once I have completed the instalation? Going back to your question, if you have hotmail, this can also be sourced via a envelope button. In I.E. 8 the two accounts have two separate buttons, or apps you might call them. You can access W.L.Mail via the hotmail one too, but not the otherway round. Sorry if this doesn't answer your question - I hope someone can help me with mine!

Windows 8 has the functionality of it built in. It may not be compatible for that same reason, such as why Microsoft security essentials can't be installed. The OS has it built into windows defender.

Anyway, try downloading and running it from this download: Windows Essentials - Download Windows Live Essentials

You need to do a backup of windows live mail. You can go to the tutorial section here and find backing up windowsl live mail , it will also explain how to import the files back into WLM. Now you install on the desktop app, windowsl live essentials 2012 onc e installed you import the backup you did and you will get everything back
You can also export your account info too
