Solved Windows 8 & Google Chrome

I recently bought a new Asus touchscreen notebook which came loaded with Win8 & IE10

So far, I love this computer! I added a 250Gb SSD and a new Intel WiFi card and everything is up and running almost perfectly - The only 'issue' is my browser

I very much like Win8 so far, especially on a touchscreen machine
I have *always* used IE - I know there are plenty of IE haters out there, but it has always served me well and I wasn't looking to change
I've also used Google for years and years and don't care to change . . . . especially not to Bing
My predicament is . . . . Bing. It seems irrevocably linked to IE10 in the Win8 platform. I've read there is a way to add Google and make it the default browser *if* you're using Win8 in the desktop mode - Obviously, I'm not
So, I'm being forced to make what for me is a big decision and really soon! I feel I just can't live another day with Bing hijacking my computer, so it appears IE10 has to go . . . . or does it?
Is there *any way* for me to keep IE10 and still be guaranteed that I'm never going to see a Bing search ever again?
If not, I'd love to hear others experience using Win8 in the metro mode with Chrome as your browser. Am I going to learn to love this combo?

Thanks in advance for your pearls of wisdom on this. At this point, I truly feel like a fish out of water

Don

you can keep Metro IE10 as your default browser. in fact, this is the preferred method even if you use other browsers. On my system, I have Chrome (which I use the most), IE10, and Mozilla Firefox. Each with its own benefits and situations where they are the best at.

To change the default search engine, make sure Metro IE10 is fully closed. Either drag the app from the top of the screen to the bottom to end-task it or use the task manager to end-task it. Then launch the DESKTOP IE10. Go to Tools > Manage Add-ons > Search Providers. then choose google and make it your default search provider. This option can be changed at any time so if you need to switch between search providers, just go back to this option and change it. Once it's changed, launch Metro IE10 and the default search provider will be Google.

I also prefer Google as my default search because of the date filters. But there are occasions where Bing does a great job. When I was doing research, sometimes I get a hit I want on page 2 of Bing that didn't show up until page 10 of Google. So there will be times that Bing is better. Also, if you create a Bing account, you can get paid by using Bing so the more searches you do with Bing, the more you can earn.

Nope, no toolbars, no nothing, running latest edition of Chrome, seems very quick and very clean so far. Just type "babylon in chrome" into google, there are many easy methods to remove it.

Hello Don,

If you like, you could disable Bing "search suggestions" and "searching in the address bar" like below to never see it in Internet Explorer.

Once it's changed, launch Metro IE10 and the default search provider will be Google.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I suspected there had to be some sort of 'work around' for this problem and you provided it. Strange, nobody from Microsoft was willing or able

I had no real desire to move away from IE after using it for more than 20 years, but it was looking like I might have to if I couldn't find a 'solution' to the 'Bing Thing' . . . . and now that's solved!

Thanks so much,

Don

Shawn,

I had done that earlier (on someone else's advice) but even with my IE set up exactly as your screen shot shows, whenever I clicked on the IE tile in my Metro start screen to do a search, it was still a Bing search, because there was no other search engine listed, let alone as default. The suggestion above works perfectly . . . . opening in the desktop mode will allow you to add Google (in Metro mode you can't) and once it's in there and made default, you're done with Bing forever! Now all my searches are Google searches, just as they were before when using earlier versions of Windows. Why they make things like this so difficult, I haven't a clue

Yeah, they should allow you to change options within Metro IE10. I think they didn't because settings are not very touch-friendly. So they thought that you could stash the settings under the desktop IE10.

"I'd love to hear others experience using Windows 8 in the metro mode with Chrome as your browser."
I just noticed the "relaunch chrome in Windows 8 mode option" in the latest version of Chrome. I've been finding Chrome kind of wonky on my new W8 pro machine, but the "Windows 8 mode" aka metro seems to be flying. Either some plugin that isn't supported in this mode, or the Chrome team has optimized this flavor for W8 as opped to the desktop flavor.
Anyone else have this experience?

is there any point to Chrome to Windows 8 mode? It seems the same as Chrome on the desktop and uses none of the Windows 8 conventions or features.

does it even have any touch features yet? I love Chrome and it's still my favorite browser but the lack of touch support is maddening.

When IE10 stopped playing videos last night, I gave up and installed Chrome and made it my default browser and video and everything else works just fine. IE10 is too "wonky" for me and Chrome seems faster and more stable.

I read somewhere that Chrome does not work with RT. Is that correct? I didn't try it because of that.

Windows RT is a completely different animal than Windows 8 and was written for a different CPU family. Chrome works well in Win8, I have no idea about RT because I have no interest or use for Windows RT. There are some others here who are much more familiar with Windows RT and I'm sure they can provide the details I don't have. Good luck!

No problem azasadny. In fact, the RT system belongs to my wife, she only just bought it in spite of me telling her to stick with Win 7! I use Chrome on my 7 systemsand wanted her to try it but she is happy (!) with IE10 anyway. My job is to set it up for her.

I got fed up with IE last night, videos suddenly stopped playing and the browser complained that I didn't have the proper add-ins to play them, but I was just playing videos and it didn't tell me what add-ons I needed. I installed Google Chrome and it seems to work fine on Win8, but I've only had it one day, so we'll see.

Then, at work today Java and IE on Windows 7 decided to stop working and I can't access our AV consoles using the java client, so I'm extremely frustrated with IE right about now!
