Zone Alarm blocks Win Live Mail 2012

After loading Zone Alarm basic free firewall v 110.000.120 ... which is compatible with Win8 .... on Win8 Pro OEM with all latest updates, (loaded from retail disk as clean installation), WinLiveMail, latest v 2012, would not send/receive emails even though shown as connected.

This was despite WLM being included in trusted programs of ZA. It blocked emails to/from using local Bigpond ISP and both Yahoo Mail accounts and Bigpond accounts on WLM. Both Yahoo Mail and Bigpond web sites are working on EI10.

A simple work around is to disable ZA and then emails can be sent/received. But that's a bit primitive and a pain in the butt, and possibly dangerous even though phishing filter is turned on in security of WLM.

Has anyone encountered this problem and found a fix.

I'm using Ex7ForW8 which has restored the original Win7 Orb Start Menu and switches off Metro Start Screen. So WLM is used on desktop.

zonealarm has traditionally been very late and very buggy. i used to be a huge zonealarm fan but now that I've adapted to windows firewall (after it took them forever to make it compatible with Windows 7), I don't see a need to go back. there's no zone alarm feature that's not in windows firewall as far as I can tell. actually, I do remember that it was easier to create a rule on the fly with zone alarm. that's the main advantage.

@dirytvu. Yeah you're probably right. I've tested both firewalls with GRC (Gibson Research Corp), Shields Up, and both were totally invisible in stealth mode. And neither responded to pings.

One feature I do like about ZA is it has pop ups to confirm/deny requests for site/pc access.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I have exactly the same ZA and WLM running on Win7 and don't have a problem.

yes, that was what I was referring to about adding rules on the fly with Zone Alarm. that's the only advantage I saw with ZA. but UAC and Windows Firewall together do pretty much the same thing.

I think if you want to stick with ZA, you'll have to be patient. they take time to get things worked out. every OS release, they've been slow in updating. I remember they said the first version for Windows 7 was compatible and that was a pile of #*%^. you haven't hung out in the ZA forums? it's a nightmare in there. you think people complain about Windows 8 a lot here? check out the support forums for ZA.
